1780 lb tiger shark caught from a pier

Post by Team Shark Fever »

BLAST FROM THE PAST.This monster shark stood for decades as one of the greatest catches ever from land anywhere in the world and was an inspiration for me as a young man to spend many days and nights on a pier, bridge or beach in search of that monster tiger or giant hammerhead.I hope you all enjoy the story it is part of shark fishing history.
Story and pictures by Capt Hal Scharp in his book "SHARK SAFARI"1975

Still stands right?

Yea a great story no doubt. There is a guy on Pier and Surf who fished with him and I believe was with him when he caught that tiger. John boats, four-foot chunks of bait, big gaffs=

Very much inspired, thanks!

I've heard about that remarkable catch. However, it was not caught in North Carolina. Cherry Grove Pier is in northern Myrtle Beach, SC. That's where it was caught.

I have a condo just down the road from this pier and fish it frequently. However they no longer allow shark fishing. I do fish the Oak Island area and the same guy holds a state recod for a 1100 pound Tiger caught from a pier on Oak Island.

Just heard over the weekend of two Great Whites caught off the NC coast, one 5 miles off and one 13 miles off. I also heard of a 13' Tiger caught off SC coast. The BIG ones are still around and waiting on us...LOL

Are there any piers left on the Outer Banks (Nags Head)?Back in the late 70's my fishing buddy Alex Mesa would go to the Outer Banks(his dad owned a small art gallery) for the summer and fish on Jennette's pier and 2 or 3 other piers whose name i can't recall.I'm thinking although those piers were built high to avoid the rough surf typical of the Carolinas that most have been blown down by the hurricanes that have devastated the east coast in the last 10 years. My buddy used to tell me about the big sharks that the guys would catch at night in those days and i looked forward to going up there to shark fish but never got the chance.

Some are still around some are gone to either hurricans or development. Sad to see some of them go but I think they are trying to make an effort for the cities to take over some of them.
