Sand Fleas

Anybody else having a difficult time catching fleas this winter? I'm in Hallandale, the Broward, Dade border

never ever seen them in #'s in Broward. I do know if you take a drive to daytona or jacksonville you can find all of the sand fleas you want.

You may be searching in an area that they recently patted down the sand. If I run across a patted beach then I find that I barely come across them.

Depending on the area, you may need to be a couple of hours after low tide...

Sand fleas are here, now in pompano and I'm sure south? I loaded up just a few tides ago.

Hello all!

Anyone have any sand flea sightings in the past few days in the South Broward or North Dade areas? Was going to try my luck again with my rake this weekend. I feel like the sand is too aggregate in South Florida to see where the fleas are compared to Central Florida's finer more compact sand.

With the pompano long gone from local waters for the most part , I doubt anyone is looking for fleas.

I catch mole crabs every day (Sorry, I refuse to call them sand fleas). They are a little more difficult to see in the grainier sand, but there are plenty of them if you know how to recognize them - and there are also patches of finer sand where they are easier to notice.

I usually find it easier to spot them in the afternoon and evening, when the sun is behind me. I see them more often on the incoming tide. It is easier to catch them even without a rake when the surf is more regular - not choppy like it is right now.

I'm in the Galt Mile area, which is more North Broward.

I use them to catch whiting and mojarra. I also got a pompano as recently as two weeks ago, so maybe there are still some strays around. I have also gotten the occasional blue runner or grunt (grunts come in from the reef at night) with them.

Are you saying you catch mojarra for consumption? If so how large are they

?????? You kidding.....I love mojarra especially the small ones. Fire up the grill really really hot, toss those puppies in and CLOSE THE LID. Here's the hard part...ya gotta remember how many fish you tossed in because then you have to count the pops. Four fish = four explosions and then they are done. Be careful cause I miscounted once and opened the lid just as the last one was blowing up! Not pretty but still was very tasty.

I have caught a few that were about a foot long. I didn't measure or weigh them.

I didn't get much food from mine because I just cut out fillets. A fishing buddy of mine gutted and scaled his, and got a decent meal by cooking the whole fish.

How much are fleas at a tackle store? I remember reading on a thread here the price of them but i can't find the thread.

I think I paid 4 or 5 bucks the last time for 2 dozen frozen ones.

That's a friggin ripoff!! Buy a rake and you'll never have that problem again!

last week there were a lot of fleas up by Pompano, not sure about this week. lots of small ones but some nice sized ones mixed in. Just start raking, good exersize.
