Awesome Beowulf, I'm sure that made the trip worth while. Good job of holding that size of a fish on for so long with the gear you had. :toast:

Thanks man, yeah, it was a blast. After peeling out a good 100 yards that fish would just hold there and I couldn't budge him at all without risk of the line breaking. But it eventually, after all the drama and a few more runs, it finally did break. :reeling:

My son and I went out Friday night around sunset. Lots of bait, used mostly pilchards. Caught 1 banded rudder fish. Snook were every where, 1 kid late teens hooked up with a short snook, beached it, and ran off with it! Everyone let him know they were out of season, he knew, said as running away, "I gotta go before FWC pops up!" and he "ran" off! Made me mad, he was there with friends, they left 2 mins after he left. He came back 30 min later and saw me then took off with out casting. My son asked a lot of questions and in the moment, it was a great teaching moment about integrity and protecting the fishery. Still a good night!

Another Monday morning of fishing with the boys! Tons of pilchards and a couple of orange spot sardines. 1 snook, a dozen rudder fish, and 3 big rays. Other anglers were catching mackerels, big runners, yellowtails, mangroves, and a beached 25lb jack crevale. Good day!

Last three Mondays have been more of the same. Pilchards everywhere, large runners, rudderfish, houndfish, seeing snook but very few hook ups. 12lb mono, small wire hooks and freelined pilchards with no leader will get you hooked up if you get past the hound fish and runners. Landing them is another story... Yesterday there were a lot of mangroves caught. Went back last night and fought the wind. Guy next to me hooked up twice on a trolley rig... both fish ran and broke him off. Couldnt see what it was, wind was blowing, huge waves, and the water was almost black. One of the kids I took fishing there during the summer sent me a pic of him netting a dozen mullet, 13-18" on Saturday afternoon. I saw a pod of about thirty run trough last Monday. Only about six in the surf yesterday morning. Its getting close friends! Last Monday a guy hooked a small nurse shark.

I went Sunday 6pm and the water was dark murky green, hardly any bait, pretty much dead. But no sooner does my arse hit the chair in the office, and the fish go nuts.

Nada, it was nice breeze. I tried pier up/down and left/right but got no snook bite... So I went up to Hillsboro Inlet. Current was strong...And I donated my $7, Williamson's hawk jig as second cast
It seems I must know bottom well before trying hawking.

I am wondering when GK will have his next hawking lesson

I forgot to say about 12" mangrove was caught on cut bait. Indeed some mangroves are in the pier !!!

If you wanna be a little more familiar with the bottom of the jetty just go at low tide and observe. If you're hawking you're going to lose jigs. Especial if you are new to it like I am. But once you figure out how the bottom feels you don't get hung up as much.

Fishing from 10:30 to 12:30 a bunch of bait still around and of course bluerunners. Lots of snook swimming around didn't seen any caught though. Caught a nice size bluerunner and yellow jack. I also met Wetwillie from here on the forums today he's a really cool and nice guy :thumleft: It was cool meeting another forum member. Hopefully it picks up soon in the next couple of weeks.

Yep! Fished Pompano today from 11 to about 1:30. Okay, so it was a late start, but I rolled over at 5 and the sun snuck up on me. Low tide, flat water the color of the Intracoastal outfall from Hillsboro Inlet. Not lookin so good so far. Bait was as it always is in summer; thick. Even had a small school of mullet pass by a couple of times. I hadn't been out for a while because it's been the regular summer of the blue runner (boring) The snook all had lockjaw and were so fat from the constant moving buffet they have available at all hours of the day. I tossed a couple of cut chunks under the tee, hopin' for a mutt or even a hog, but Noooooooooo! And, I also found out that pelicans don't care for houndfish. Didn't know that. Still a great day to be out in the salt air and rain wasn't until late in the afternoon. And, yes, a huge shout out to my man, Matt! It was nice to put a face with a screen name for once. He knows his stuff and demonstrated it for me a couple of times. We're both hopin' it starts to pick up in the next month or so. Oh, also saw one gentleman from the islands with a 48 quart cooler full of runners, all 12 to 14 inches. Said he got them thick early in the a.m. He was planning to sell them and pay for his fishing trip. Smart man! I guess there's a market for blue runner out there somewhere. I heard they raised parking at Dania again? What's up with that? Anybody?Hope to see ya again, Matt. Till later, don't get any on ya! Oh, I also still have Nilson's cheeseburger but it's "Rare".
Those other fish must be smart. We caught all the stupid ones!

I was passing by the pier last night around 5:30 p.m. and stopped to just look around. I walked out to assess what was happening so I could at least write up this report. The water was flat, no surf and still that nasty green/brown canal brackish color. There was a small north current. I'd call it a movement, not really even a current. Bait was thick but had moved away from shore, further out toward the tee. The shallows were very active, and I spotted several medium sized rays looking for dinner and also what I first thought were sharks in close. They turned out to be two monster tarpons, once I was able to focus on them better, around 150 each! The only significant catch was a keeper snook these three teenagers nabbed. They were heading for the parking lot with it, but it appeared to be dried out some, so it had been caught a while back. Still, a keeper is a keeper. By then, the rain was in on me so I bailed and headed west. The blue runners told me to tell you all that you should come up and visit them anytime. They'll be glad to cooperate. Tight lines, my Brothers of the Salty Wooded Plank. Out! :salut:

Went out from 10 to 12 ton of bait and little schools of finger mullet did not really see anything around the mullet. Ton of bluerunners, jacks, and Couple short snappers being caught. I heard there were some macs yesterday but I didn't see any today

Tried on Sat morn, did see a little mac in the water but it was impossible to get around the runners! Yeah, the boo-runna's are outta control, any pilchard, dead or alive or even cut, just drop it in and it got swarmed by runners. Unless of course a needlefish got ya instead. Still beats a skunkin' any day. :reeling:

was at the pier from 11-3

caught my first spanish mackerel today at the pier :happyfisherman: I was throwing the gotcha all day but when I switched to a bubble rig I got it. Only saw 1 other spanish mackerel and 1 baby king come up. The mackerels were caught around noon.

Image

also had a small blue runner freelined that hooked into something huge but I only had my small rod and line so after 2 minutes of trying to pull it it snapped, couldn't see what it was but it was so heavy and put up barely any fight :reeling:

Also when I first arrived at the pier I saw that someone had caught a huge barracuda probably 3 foot.

You are right, thinking about them as well. Lite line, crappie jigs and how fast they hit they are fun.

Greetings, Brothers and Sisters of the salty wooden plank! I ventured out from about 11:00 to 2:30 p.m. today. Upon arrival, it was low tide, canal water from the outfall and small waves inshore. Wind was east around 12 and rain threatened but never came. Monster thick bait schools just behind the waves on both sides. All morning, crappie jigs were the trick for small macks, or as I call them, "Smacks". Saw at least 6 to 9 come over the rail, and they were aggressive. That smack action died around noon but then the schools of jacks came in heavy. They came in waves (pun intended) and exploded the baits up against the beach and surface of the water. It was like watching fireworks; explosions all in the shallows, just ten feet off the beach. Small plugs worked, but the better choice was simply a livey on a circle hook. The jacks averaged 12 to 16 inches and were a blast to catch. Also had some larger boo runnas up to 18 inches. You had to get your livey down fast or the hounds would strike and kill it. Goin' back again! Out!

Went out Sunday night for a couple hours. All I got was few 14" mullet. Strung one up but no takers. Lots of runners and a couple macs caught by others that I could see.
Went back Monday morning, Jack Crevalles were busting the sardines, I caught 3 on spoons, others were catching them and huge blue runners on sardines and bubble rigs w/jigs.
Took my son Monday night for a couple hours and he caught 1 Jack Crevalle. Although others were catching small cudas and a few mangroves and macs.
Both days it was windy, wavey, and dirty water. Starting to get interesting!

The conditions looked so good for today that I took a a vacation/fishing day from work. Hit the pier early stayed til 11:30. All I can say is JACKATTACK! :reeling: They were all over and almost impossible to avoid. Tried a few different tactics til I finally managed to get around the darn things for a couple of macs and a blue runner. Btw, some of the macs were juvenile kings. All in all, it was action packed, I picked a good day. :viking:

Side note: I was surprised at how crowded it was for a Tuesday, and it was tangles everywhere and ducking lures, the morning drunks, the fish rapists keeping dozens of jacks then trying to sell them to tourists... typical PompPier.

Exact same thing this morning! I was there from 8-10am. Caught a dozen Jacks, and 2 monster Runners. 2 short snook were caught while I was there... a reel dude threw him back, the other was a baby that was kept regardless of people informing the guy that it wasn't legal   . Lots of fun on light tackle! Couldn't get to the macs though. No one was with in 100 feet of me... I catch 2 back to back, then I get swamped and tangled. Oh well, I guess that's how it goes here, Same as what BEOWULF said!
