West coast grouper fishing 7/12

Had a chance to go out with a few friends on one of their new boats,a 33' Palmetto (sweet ride) on a grouper overnighter out of Sarasota. The super-moon made for somewhat tough conditions, and the bite was pretty slow by his standards, but we still caught plenty of fish. We ended with 12 red grouper, 2 gags, 1 scamp, and a ton of big mangroves over 20", along with a couple dolphin, vermillons and lanes. The mangrove snapper bite was crazy at night, drop a 1 oz knocker rig down, and almost instantly hook up with a 4-5 lb grover.

I grill them.

Last night, I made Thai-style snapper and grouper throats on the grill. Was great.

They weren't spawning, but were thick. The guys I went with said that they are always there.

That area just doesn't get much pressure, as not many guys want to burn the amount of fuel it takes to get to the good bottom grounds.

They are the most tender parts of the grouper, especially the cheeks. I sear the cheeks like I would cook sea scallops..they taste even better then scallops to me.
