No Anti Reverse Lever
I've noticed that some salt water spinning reels do not have an anti reverse lever. Is there an advantage to this?

Is there advantage to even having one ? If so I havenever found one. One more thing to break and one more thing to go wrong
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

I've often wondered why the are there , in the first place . I've been fishing over 60 years , and can't think of one time when I used it . Occasionally it would get bumped and allow the reel to turn backwards . All it did was create a problem .

I use it all the time in the field. Plus, reeling backwards once in a while is good for the gears too, I believe it allows some grease to work its way back into the teeth that have been under constant pressure in the other direction.

I don't see the point. Just one more thing to break. Have you ever seen em on a conventional? If there's some important use for them that I just don't know of, why don't conventional reels have em?

Are there quality/expensive spinning reels that still have the anti reverse lever on them?

Exactly, you don't see em on Stellas or Van Staals.Ham wrote:Are there quality/expensive spinning reels that still have the anti reverse lever on them?

Anti reverse on my light tackle reel broke today. This thread is a jinx.

Do you require an anti reverse on your light reel? Actually do "ANY" spinning reels require it?

Have you ever tried to fish a reel without anti reverse? any tension on the line makes the handle spin backwards.Ham wrote:Do you require an anti reverse on your light reel? Actually do "ANY" spinning reels require it?

Sorry, I should have asked...On a lighter reel is the anti reverse lever necessary?

+1 on never figuring out what reversing is for. I first thought it had to do with switching a reel over for lefties, but that does not seem to make sense either.
Hard to believe that it has a use and no one here knows what is is. Pretty obscure.

The reason they still exist is for small mouth anglers. It used to be in style to fight smallies realing forward and backward.

The best answer I could find is this............"if you are bottom fishing on a boat and it's rough you can keep it on the bottom and move your rod but it still stays on bottom". Not a really great answer but it's a possible explanation.

Sheesh, amazed to discover that I'm such a rare animal; one who actually uses the AR switch!
I often fish lures at night using a swivel which many times locks up against the tip in the dark. The switch allows freeing it up quickly and putting the least stress on the tip. Old style reels didn't have this issue since there was some slack in the anti reverse.
Anyways, it works for me. To each his own. Happy New Year y'all.

What's wrong with pulling out a foot of line , through your drag . Accomplishes the same results ? I've done this a jillion times .BEOWULF wrote:Sheesh, amazed to discover that I'm such a rare animal; one who actually uses the AR switch!

I also like the AR lever & use it the same way as the poster "Sandy Feet" does. I find it easier to let line out than to pull against the drag of the reel. Though i will agree with others that it is another moving part that can go wrong. Either way it's a trade off or preference.

I think it is for the people that use a spinner on the top of the rod.

Re: No Anti Reverse Lever
actually I have always heard it is for fighting fish w/o a drag. I have tried the method unsuccessfully.
