mystery fish
went out of 15th street marina the other night to snapper fish...when we came back we were cleaning all the fish.. i decided to walk to water and throw a carcus in to see if anything was there... carcus sank alittle and dissapeared...
i thought maybe a tarpon, so i cleaned abouy a 20lb king and threw the carcuz in sank a little and the whole thing dissapeared....
thats when i knew it was a jew jew.... i was bored lastnight so i went over there round 2 am with my 12/0 and put a topshot of about 40 yards of 200 lb mono got there put a bonia half on the hook dropped it in and it took about 2 minutes, i felt the thump i set the hook and all hell broke loose.... i thought maybe it was a 80-100 lb fish... but with a locked drag and 200 lb as soon as i set the hook it pinned me against the piling (if it wasnt for the piling i would have went in) and just took line off the reel like it was nothing... after pulling about 50 yards of line, the hook pulled, which im glad.... bloody elbows and my mind blown i went home... has anyone seen this fish or herd anything about the fish from someone, i would love to know how big it is...

Time for the straight rope to the hitch of your truck.

Walk slow, and carry a big Snook.

Re: mystery fish
This could have ended up being a missing backwoods case... LOL BE CAREFUL buddy, there be monsters in this here water... Rope+cable tied to pylon, bring at least another warm body so we can see a pic of her in all her fat glory! GL!
I once had a similar thing happen... We used to toss the carcasses over the side in a relatively shallow marina in Key West Harbor. Always the next morning they would be gone, and I figured shark... SO, I had the bright idea of tying about 25 yards of 1000 lbs mainline onto a large hook and leaving it overnight with a tasty chunk of tuna carcass tied to the 20 foot skiff we used as a tender. I figured, in the morning I would come back and take a pic of whatever it was to be released later... Bad idea... Came in the morning to a flipped skiff and a ripped off cleat... I never knew what it was, however after seeing that I did not go swimming there anymore... My uncle thought it was just some asshat as he did not know of my evil plans... To this day I have no clue what did that, it must have been a freight train to be able to flip that skiff... Very cool stuff to know that there are still things like these in the ocean, especially so close to shore... Keeps it mysterious and interesting! Let us know if you happen to have another encounter!

Re: mystery fish
It is a Jewfish, about 150-200lbs...you have to get him from a boat in the water, you cant land him on the docks. I had the same experience you did, then decided, alright, I can play this game. fished off the bow of a parked boat (with the owers permission), hooked his azz and drug him away from the wall/pilings. I was using a friends Penn 80W, no idea what pound line was on it, but it had a VERY heavy leader I'd guess upwards of 300lbs.
There is a fine line between Love & Hate.Hate is pushing them off a ledge. Loving them means you don't taunt them after you've pushed them off.

Re: mystery fish
I know its a Jew fish....and Idk how many you have caught...but ive caught plenty in the 100_200 pound range both from land ma boat.....and have landed most. and nun of them felt close to that Upowerful...this fish is a true beast I would rather try to catch him off land than go on a boat and pull him out...to me that's not fishing...save that part for the sissysUsername28 wrote:It is a Jewfish, about 150-200lbs...you have to get him from a boat in the water, you cant land him on the docks. Re: mystery fish
I take it as a personal challenge when a fish/sea creature whips my ass. I will go back and get whatever it was, come hell or high water. I have in the past tied ropes and 500lbs line to a large hook, with a nice piece of bait in the water, with the other end attached to a vehicle or large tree....
I will not give up till I find out what it was.

With all the free meals there is no telling how big that thing is w/o seeing it. A couple of days ago
I was watching about an 8ft bull checking out a jack I had on top for a while then when I wasn't looking my line starts ripping toward the togas. The 100# mono failed as soon as I loaded up the rod. No problem. Only lost a hook and leader.

Going out on a limb here, but maybe, just maybe, there could be more then one jewfish in the intercoastal around 15th St. Just maybe.Username28 wrote:I have seen the jewfish at that ramp, I had to remove the hook.Green Tide wrote:With all the free meals there is no telling how big that thing is w/o seeing it. Ive seen that guy hanging around in there before. Its just a big old bucket mouth, next try using a top water frog.
