Pflueger Medalist VS. Shimano Spheros

I'm considering these 2 reels for an 8' spinning rod I got from Dblue. I know little about saltwater reels only what I read in reviews and from members like you. The medalist is 20 dollars cheaper than the spheros 6000, I know a lot of people love the shimano's in the salt, and pflueger is often regarded as the cheaper brand. What do you guys think is the best reel, like to hear any opinions. the medalist is the 6060X

The only difference between the spheros 6000 and 8000 is the spool i.e. line capacity I like all 3 of my Spheros and that would be my choice out of the two reels. My dad had a medalist and liked it but it didn't last long in saltwater.

yeah lomax those are a bit out of my price range, i figure you'd probably choose shimano over pflueger though

... Yep. I'd choose a Shimano. But, I sure as hell would never spend that much on a Stella.

... Bingo. The "only" Shimano "spinner" I own is a STRADIC 2500. Cost around $130. Kick ass little ultralite.

If i find one for under 100 i will like on ebay or something.. But I'm trying to keep my budget under 100 for this reel, I found the spheros 6000 for 83 bucks at an online tackle store

Personally I would take the Spheros over the Stradic right now. The new stradics have really been having problems from what I have read, while the spheros is a workhorse of a reel that can take a good beating. If you want to shell out money then look at the Quantum Boca's or better yet the Cabo's but those are out of range.

Shimano hands down, Mark Sosin endorses plueger which equals a good reason not to get one

Actually shimano just has a stellar track record and easy to service.

lol on every board i've ever looked at someone is bashing mark sosin, if it wasn't for him i'd never get to see any saltwater fishing on tv. guys tell me why no one likes mark sosin, i know he endorses pflueger for money lol

I can tell you why I don't think highly of him. I grew up watching him fish and ran into him a few years ago at the ICAST as he walked past me I said hello and he gave me the look of death. I then saw him ignore everyone who approached him including kids that asked for autographs. He needs to remember that when people no longer watch him that he no longer has endorsments and has to get a real job not just fishing for a living. I would chalk it up to him having a bad day but to many other people have similar stories about him for that. Please pay me millions to fish and I will be the friendliest person out there.

... How hard can it be to catch when you have a hired guide put you on top of the fish. I hear this yoyo treats people like he is way above them on the species list. He is unimpressive.
I bet if you throw this guy on to the pier, most of the regs will whoop his a** at catching fish. Atleast we can make use of him and send him down to the pier office for a hotdog run and sodas.

you guys have sold me on the spheros for the 8' Dblue rod I have... I think I'm going with the shimano spheros 8000......

On my 11'Dblue I want something that will cast really well, how does the bigger capacity sphero's cast???? I looked at the stradics but honestly I don't see a line capacity that I like, on my 11' i want at least 350 of 15#...

I was looking at the Daiwa Emcast 5500 for the 11', but I read a few things about them having trouble with a couple things, but they are supposed to cast like a rocket.

Do the spheros cast really well, i know they are mighty tough and reliable but i was always worried about them not casting as well.... I respect your opinion Rijkaard, don't know much about saltwater reels thats why I'm asking. Didn't know daiwa's wasn't up to par!

The Spheros cast well I use my 8000 with 15 lb. mono and a 1/4 oz. jighead and live shrimp for snook so they cast that well enough to fish with doing this. The Emcast casts well but my friend had one loved it at first but it didn't last long but it holds a ton of line. I beat my spheros to death and they still hold up well. They are a good overall reel for the price unless you want to spend more money for higher end spinners like a Stella. I have 2 Stellas and love them but is the extra $500 worth, not really in the long run unless you have the money to spend on them. Go with the Spheros and you will be happy.

i have done a lot of reading on penn reels and just about every review i see on the captiva's and other new penn reels is a disaster, everyone is complaining about them.. approval ratings like 3 out of 5 or something

I want a good reel thats why i'm asking these questions, I know I'll get that one spheros 8000 for my 8', but just not sure on the 11' yet... just wondering if the spheros will cast with an emcast, or what i'd have to spend to get a good reel that will cast like the emcast

I just got my emcast sport last week.
It seems like a good reel for the money.
Holds alot of line and is smooth.
It does have some plastic parts,But I am not going to use it everyday.
I got it from that auction site for about $10 off retail

yeah, i hear some people on here braggin and a few other guys i know say man the shimano gears will sound like a coffee grinder if you surf fish any, and these are all people i know take good care of their gear, makes no sense how some people swear by them and others hate them

Thats the thing with shimano... Its..precision and tight tolerance...
high pitch gears are what make that butter smooth feel in them..
if any thing were to get in the gear case.. it will have a grindy feel...

Stradics and the like are yuppy reels that shouldnt never get a drop of blood on them.. or even scratched and god forbid a spec of sand even touches the spool... LOL..

Need a spinning reel for sand..or for any hardcore reel deal fishing ..Old skool "SLOPPY" Penns should be in your arsenal..Perferably 700 series or Z series

The grinding noise you hear.. it could the bearing that is in the line roller..
FH series stradics are notorious for this...Call Shimano.. ask them about the problem.. and they should correct it by sending you the bearing that sould have been in there in the first place..

To find out if you have this problem... take the spool off and crank the handle.. if there is no noise its the roller bearing..

For the record I fish with stradics and i would never think of bringing them
onto the beach...to fish with

This post is not to bash stradic or shimano in general...
Shimano is an incredible company that stands behind the product that they sell..

I love fishing with my stradic... it has a very tight feel to it.. its just not a reel that should be fished hardcore day in and dayout.. It will give you problems... I have fished with inexpensive reels that i have trashed.. and they just kept ticking like a swiss watch till the day i handed them down...

There is no reason why a stradic should give you problems.. but they do..
The people that say they dont have the problems might not be rough on there tackle? The ones that never have had a problem... Look at there stradics ... I bet they look brand new...Reels and rods get beat up..If you fish... Of course if you baby anything you will get a longer life out of it..

2 weeks ago the anti reverse went out on my 5000... It just went out of the blue... i would have been retired if it was the only reel I was fishing with for the night.

yeahhh........ I talked to some folks today about them.. mentioned the emcast and they said it was an excellent reel for the money for surf fishing, asked about shimano's they said ultra smooth great durable reel, but not good on the beach..............

it's killing me trying to figure this out, from what i am learning it's like this.. the shimano's are great reels, the better care taken of them the longer they will last, however it's starting to seem like the more you spend isn't necessarily the better reel you get like you "cuban" said about the stradics..

I am glad i started this post, i am learning and really enjoying the different opinions

How much money a reel or rod cost.. has nothing to do with how much fun or the amount of fish you will catch in a day...

A reel that I recommend that everyone should purchase and try out is the Shimano Slade this reel cost $25
