Re: Why fish for sharks?
Good debate. I have a clear understanding of shark tournements and I believe that supervised challenge in sharking is a great sport. Ghosts from the past effect people today. Did anyone see that dolphin harvest tape out of the island in Japan? Man, if I were a part of that distruction my concious would be screaming for me to do the right thing. Then you get a couple of homeless carting a nurse shark through Miami metro mover. What a sign of the times and a huge advertisement for disrespect of the animal. Shark on a train...left to die in the streets. Immediate ban on nurse sharks? My point being it seems our thread starter has had his day in the commercial world and has seen many things associated with distruction of the species. I respect his point of view. But, responsable tournements will do nothing but create fun, challenge and good press for the sport. My two cents.

Re: Why fish for sharks?
That video of the Japanese people harvesting the Dolphins is disturbing. However, Like Fishnfool said before they harvest them as a food source. The same way we harvest our beef, and poultry. We are use to cows and chickens getting slaughter. To us it is acceptable. Since we do not eat Dolphins or Whales we see this in our eyes unacceptable.rshields wrote:Good debate. Re: Why fish for sharks?
Just a couple quick points.
Removing Sharks from the market is a great idea. There would still be a huge black market for shark fins since the price would go even higher, but at least commercial guys would have to be looking over thier shoulder for the law man all the time. I am not going to go through the numbers because you already know the damage that commercial does to sharks compared to recreational fishermen. Rec fishermen are under attack enough as it is, we dont need our fellow fishermen pilling on.
You said that you used to recreationally and commercially shark fish in the past. Well its real easy to tell other people not to shark fish now that you have reached an age that leaves you without the energy to take on such a physically demanding activity, especially since you have already got your fill of it for many years. I would more respect your stance if you would have dropped everything in your younger years and taken up the cause then.
I release every single shark that I catch and its a decent amount of them for off the beach. Anyone who was on this forum and got caught killing sharks and leaving them on the beach would be run off the forum. Dont ruin everyone's enjoyment because of a select few rotten apples. Are we supposed to stop snook fishing all together because some people keep oversized or out of season fish?
Our tourneys are completly catch and release and all care has to be taken during the capture and release or you lose points or can be kicked out of the tourney. There was a team a couple years ago kicked out of the tourney for pulling the sharks up on the rocks instead of soft sand. Dont mix us with the kill tourney of your time and area up north.
No offense but I have had enough of people from the northeast coming down to florida and trying to pass ordinances that limit when, where, and for what we can fish.

Re: Why fish for sharks?
I personally don't think that shark fishing should be banned. It's a passion for many. It's like telling a race car driver to stop racing because it's dangerous and it could get him killed. It's just not going to happen. Some people live off of the risk and the thrill of being able to apprehend a killing machine. I don't normally target sharks but if I do catch one, I'll feel great about it. It will make me feel even better to let it go so that it may be able to fight another day.
I'm that guy who's too thick skinned...remember?

What ticks me off is people moving down here and then tell people who've paid taxes here, built and re-built the piers, fought the long liners, fought netting, fought careless release of fresh water, rebuilt and replenished mangrove islands in lake worth, pass conservation legislation year after year etc. etc. etc. all their lives how it should be done because of their experience up north. The guys who've been here are the conservationists, and the snook, redfish and trout you are catching is because of them.
If you come here, enjoy what Florida has to offer, but don't venture what you think an informed opinion of what it is to be a Florida fisherman and who Florida fishermen are at least until you don't have white rings around your ankles anymore.

Re: Why fish for sharks?
for the same reson people fish for marilins and sailfish.. the enjoyment of the fight catch pix and stories to tell also your not killing the fish so that it can live to see another day and another catch therefor raising the population of fish and fish size becuse of the over kill of commercial fishing. not the fish population is dramatically lower and so are the fish size's . and if we were to kill the shark the meat is delicious... we can all eat nothign goes to waste... now people who killl fish for no reason other then to show what they cought then yes. thoses are bad people and should be killed
for the same reason just to show off the kill ..hahhahaha

Venumnos - (no offense intended) but seriously i can only understand about half of what you said.
Now to start im not saying that fishing for sharks to keep or for catch and release is good or bad. Im leaving my opinion out of this but I posted the article in response to the debate over the ban of shark fishing by the original poster.
My reasoning: Recreational fisherman and those that compete in shark fishing CR tournements are definitely not contributing to ALL of the 73million dead sharks per year that fall victim to the newly bourgeois in the rest of the world that are hungry for shark fin soup.
If Conservation is the point in such a ban what good does it do when the rest of the world doesnt give a damn?

Re: Why fish for sharks?
Hahaha I just re read what I wrote, and wow maybe I should type slower and proof read what I write some times. But basically a concise summary of what I meant is. We shark fish because we like it and commercial fisherman have dramatically decreased the fish population thus fourth leading to smaller fish compared to the old days. We mainly catch and release and once in a while keep a small one to eat. What is the harm in that? (Rhetorical question) Now what I do frown upon are those people who kill sharks for no reason other then to show it off or cut the fins of to sell.SFLSeraphim wrote:Venumnos - (no offense intended) but seriously i can only understand about half of what you said.

by the way "rare" READING COMPREHENSION rules state "Photos of dead Sharks will not be tolerated this site is about the catch and release of Sharks 02/25/10 This is in accordance with the Shorebound Shark Tourney." so when reading the rule please comprehend what it states... according to the rule it states no pics of dead shrks for the shark tourney and not in general.... i understand where you're coming from and i been in the sport for over 10 years and cought and released litteraly HUNDREDS of sharks i'm not out to kill them. only times i ever kept a shark "and eat it" is if the shark is already dead like it got half eaten by another shark during the fight and comes out dead...Other then that i always catch and release. But even so we are allowed one per day and if your going to eat it whats the big deal? snook population was almost gone because pf comercial fishing back in the days. so now there are laws two per day and in season.. so why not complain about people posting pics of dead snooks??? it's the same difference! But once again to be clear I dont kill sharks they are my friends!rshields wrote:venumnosYou are opening a huge can of worms. Not good for members in the sport, pictures can be used against the sport

No, the rules applied for the entire BF site and Shorebound Tourney. This has nothing against you for posting the picture. We know your intent was not malice. However, we have watch groups always on this site taking dead shark pictures and use them against us. To prevent any future problems this site will only allow catch and release pictures. I hope you understand.venumnos wrote:by the way "rare" READING COMPREHENSION rules state "Photos of dead Sharks will not be tolerated this site is about the catch and release of Sharks 02/25/10 This is in accordance with the Shorebound Shark Tourney." so when reading the rule please comprehend what it states... according to the rule it states no pics of dead shrks for the shark tourney and not in general.... We are not saying you cannot harvest sharks within your legal limit. Since this forum runs the Catch and Release Shark Tourney we have to look at the big picture. Watch groups will not care if the picture was part of the tourney or not. They will use it against the Tourney Organization and any Shark Organization. This very innocent picture can be fuel for these watch group and help to ban all shark fishing of South Florida beaches. Having said this you can understand the difference why we allow Snook killed pictures compare to Shark killed pictures. If we start a C&R Snook Tourney the very same rule will go into effect.venumnos wrote:i understand where you're coming from and i been in the sport for over 10 years and cought and released litteraly HUNDREDS of sharks i'm not out to kill them. only times i ever kept a shark "and eat it" is if the shark is already dead like it got half eaten by another shark during the fight and comes out dead...Other then that i always catch and release.
