what about the rays! / blood?

Post by Lord of the Rays »

hi people.

i am located in South Australia
im really into going after bronzies and gummy sharks etc but i only ever seem to catch stingrays, never sharks. is there a stringray forum someone can direct me to?

only ever caught two bronzies, a 2fter and a 4fter. totally awesome on the 4fter. other people seem to do much better than me. do i need to use blood? im starting to suspect other people do this. cant really do that in adelaide with all the people etc, likely to get chased out of town.

any advice?

Catch big stingray and use it whole as shark bait.

im not sure i have enough hooks. nah its definitely an idea, but atm im only using a 114 - 6/0 senator/equivelant reel. im more after 4-7fters atm. im looking at getting a 12/0 or something but running 80lb for stand up land based game is a bit overboard imo.

maybe ill get a 9/0-12/0 and just run stacks of 50lb. wont have to reline as often then. thats allot of cash in one hit. what do you suggest?

Do you have any obstructions where you fish (reefs, bridge pilings, etc)? A lot of us here use 100-130 lb mono due to having to deal with these. Welcome to the forum, by the way, cool to have a sharker from down under.

Damn that is a huge stingray. I would use the stingray's wing and float out or yak your bait out to the reef or channel. I would recommend going to a larger reel since you have big sharks in your waters.

i fish allot around jetties, but i know some spots 90mins out of the city where i can usually get good winds for ballooning (have been putting it off lately because of the cold weather) i know some people who've been spooled there, its a bit of a lucky dip kinda spot.
its rare for me to get the right wind where im at which is a shame because i live a 3min walk from the beach. dont like jetties, too many tourists and timewasters hogging up the area. i want to get a kayak at some point but that probably wont be for a bit - money wise.
with my rod/rig setup i can cast a good 50m though can probably do a little better.

if i dont have to worry about things to get snagged on so much do you think i could get away with 80lb on a 12/0 (im thinking trilene brand line) what about using 130 leader if im off a jetty? can that be a bit dodgy at the line join.

everyone out this way has told me a 6/0 will handle anything up to 8-9ft bronzies, sort of seems over the top to go higher. we're only legally allowed to use up to 12/0 hooks over here also.

some of the locals in south australia are real pitchforkers, especially out in the country. if your fishing off the town jetty and you're running a thick trace with big hooks some people can get real agro and shitty. i figure so long as you dont pour blood into water where anyone might swim there's no problem, if theres a shark in the area its going to go for your bait. one dead squid or fish suspended midwater is no bigger a deal than having a couple crab nets out imo. but many people fail to comprehend the scope of the picture and prefer to react irrationally.

i say you should move around if the area you fish is ray infested. OR, you should think about keeping
your bait off the bottom. you can do this if you use a bottle or float to rig it were the bait is suspended in the upper water column.
best area to do it is at an inlet by floating the bait out during low tide.

Yeah, it's really popular on the west coast and coral coast there. Australia is truly some of the worlds finest fishing! They have the same species of bluefish (called Tailor), and they average 10 lbs and can reach 40!

yeah probably, im pretty sure its a smooth ray, same that did Irwin. some silly old woman thought i hooked a manta ray, she went crazy at me, she called fisheries, the police & the newspaper. the barb was 13 inches. the end of the tail was no less than an inch thick at the end. retrospectively i shouldn't have bothered landing it, it caused allot of conflict and the article in the newspaper though didn't slander me, didnt make me look like a hero either. i dont usually barb stingrays but barbing it was the safest way to get it out of its submerged status enough to swim it away while getting the gaff and the trace back. i dont bother using traces for stingrays anymore, this is one of the reasons. sometimes ill just use a 7/0-10/0 tarpon hook and throw it out from the causeway, handreel style.
anyway de-barbing it was extremely dangerous because of the powerful strength in the tail, the length of the barb and the fact that i was using shitty tools to do so. big but rusty pliers and a dead blunt knife. not to mention that stupid geriatric kept trying to jynx me, kept yelling she hoped i'd get the barb and that i deserved it. that was the only time i think i've ever yelled at anyone over 60 without them having a hearing difficulty. it ended well retrospectively, did nothing illegal, met a cool chick and landed like 5 rays in one night. oh also briefly hooked up to a shark that spat my hook getting some pretty good air.

in retrospect i learnt to, bring my own camera, use a mono trace when strictly targetting rays, and be as covert as is nessecary.

Hey man,

I went to Flinders on exchange during college and lived in the area for about 8 months. Which jetty are you close to? I use to go to Glenelg pretty often. I also went to Rapid Bay as well.

Not much...only fished there once...caught some mackerel, mullet, tommies, and salmon trout. However, it did look like a good place for sharks. Didn't have much gear with me...but wondered if a live lined mackerel or mullet might attract something bigger.

Have you tried the mouth of the port river?

sometimes, thousands of slimey mackerel congregate around the rapid bay jetty. i've tried live baiting them there but with no results. you get yellow tail kingfish there but i've never landed one. the few times they've taken my baits they've pileoned me before i was able to get to my rod.

i've tried the mouth of the port river but not very seriously. nothing but bream. i know you get plenty of rays there, sometimes mulloway and i've heard if you walk up the breakwater to the end (its like a km) its a good spot to balloon out for large bronzies from.

i might be doing a trip up to port lincoln with some mates to target large bronze whalers. there are some good spots around there, north shields, cape donnington etc. i really need a larger vehicle with decent 4wd capabilities.

Yeah...I fished the Port River and Patualunga in Glenelg for break and salmon-trout but not much else. An educated guess...I would expect the mouth of the Port River at the end of the breakwater on an outgoing tide to be pretty good. Usually, sharks (and anything else) will congregate around the mouths of rivers/bays on the outgoing to feed. If rays and mullaway are present, the bronzies shouldn't be far behind.

Yeah, I also wanted to fish the far west beaches around Ceduna but never made it...would have been tough as I didn't have a car.

Definitely let us know how ya do.
