A 780 lb Mako was caught by some guys swordfishing, see today's Sun-Sentinel.

Saw that on the TV this morning. I know it is his legal rights to kill it but such ashamed to kill such a beautiful predator.
The Judge asked the prostitute, "At what point did you realize you were raped?"
The prostitute replied (wiping away tears), "When the check bounced."

You have to have a set to free gaff mako of that size. Thats crazy. Also how did they give fishermen a bad name? They caught a fish of a lifetime, That is great to eat. If anything they did something that most people would never have the balls to do. I did'nt see a harpoon so if they just gaff the shark my hat off to them.

It's a diffrent story when people kill tiger, hammer heads, ect and dump them like bucky. But if they ate it then i see no problem. :reeling: :toast:
Well for one thing, if they did free gaff it, that is illegal, sharks must be caught on hook and line.

C.J. wrote:True but thats there issue. Im just saying free gaffing a fish that would be insane. I did'nt see if they had it on rod n reel but if they did'nt they could be in serious trouble.
Not arguing that it would be nuts, but they give fishermen a bad name by breaking the laws like that and giving the PETA types more ammo.

I beg to differ. I believe harvesting a shark is fine but there should a be size limit on the shark. Smaller sharks are perfect eating size. But when you have big breeding sharks I feel they so be let go. Same as for Snook.

I understand the video is being reviewed by the NMFS. The source was a friend of my son who is in the CG. He also said that it may be a month or more before charges are filed. Being as it's hear say I have no clue if it's true or not. While I applaud Scotts point of view I also have to respect Bolos as well. For me it's the age of a 780 lb Shark of any species. The accumulated toxins in it's body make it unsafe to eat.
Nice Boat! Now get it outa my driveway!

Seems to me like they purposely chummed and planned this to call the news ahead of time so they could be on the news....theirs a swordfish carcass on a black rope so they werent swording they were sharkfishing....makos are dangerous and if they free gaffed the fish they arent that smart.....Mako is almost identical to swordfish, but if any shark isnt gutted after death the meat will go bad and its useless.....

Not true with mako's. They don't discreat urea like other sharks
Are you sure about that? I don't think there are any sharks that don't let urea out when they die. My uncle used to fish for makos off of Montauk NY, and they always gutted and iced them immediately after they were safe to boat (usually with a 12 gauge slug in their head). He said the quality in the meat was night and day if they did that. He hasn't killed one in years, this was back in the 80s.

Thats true with all sharks.....I worked for a few years at a local fish market that processed alot of sword and makos here and there...and thats true about pumpkin sword, thats probably the best eating fish that goes on the grill.
