Amelia Inlet

Got on a boat for once on March 28th but sea too rough to get out, we still got a few species in the Inlet. Whiting, sharks and a 42 lb. Black Drum.

Nice fish and pictures. I've heard that there have been a lot of really big drum caught up there lately.

Good firm white meat similar to redfish when they are up to about 20-25 inches. Bigger than that and they are tough. I've had the small ones and they are awesome. Never had a big one, but there's got to be a reason nobody keeps em.

Black drum are good eating up to 15 lbs or so. After that they are tough and wormy as heck. Keep the small ones picture then release the biggers ones. Besides how much fresh fish do you need?

Hey none of my fish goes in the freezer but bait. Anyone I give it to must promise it will be eaten fresh. Once fish goes into the freezer it normally winds up in the trash a year later since most people have no clue how to freeze fish. I try not to let any fish I catch go to waste.

Not true. I have 2 pics worth taking. I would have more except I rely on others to have a camera. Granted i'm not up to the caliber of the great fish slayer known as fishnfool73.

It is good that you realize that you aren't good at fishing. Self awareness and self short comings are things that many people overlook. Kudos to you

for realizing that you aren't that good at fishing I bet you change a mean light bulb or hang Christmas lights like no ones business.

I agree, i have eaten them 4 to 7 pounds years ago and they were tasty, but i would never eat a big one. It's a tough thing for the captain, he has to get pictures back at the dock for the town paper to attract business for trophy size drum. I watched him cut that fish up for the older guys and the fillets did not look that big to me, maybe two 8 pound fillets on a 42 pound fish, most of the weight was in the head and fish guts. There were also about 3 lbs of fish eggs that they were going to make caviar with, no thanks

It is a slippery slope indeed for a captain with a conscience. Release the big fish or slap it on a peg board to impress possible future ignorant clients. I would be more likely to take a captain out that is possibly lying to me with tales of release vs a peg board of dead fish headed for a dumpster but then I am a semi educated fishermen.

I can remember as a kid watching the charters come into the dock at Key West, and the captains hanging the catch on nailboards for the tourists to take their pictures with. Huge cudas, sharks, and even tarpon. After the pictures, the "trash fish" were just thrown in the harbor for the crabs. I saw a 20' hammerhead hanging there once.
We've come a long way, fortunately.

None of that big drum was wasted or thrown in a dumpster, there are big goliath grouper that feed on the leftovers at the docks as well as pelicans but in my opinion the quality of that meat is poor on a big drum. I liked seeing the big fish but did not need to see it die, to each his own, i do respect the rights of a person who wants to eat fish but that is just not me anymore, maybe 20 years ago but not now.

They have been catching big bonnetheads at Little Talbot, use half a crab on a fishfinder rig. Whiting and blues have been hit and miss, and pompano are getting scarce. Lots of bait in the water. Jax pier has been taking kings on pin rigs, during the week it might not be too crowded.
