... I was goofin'. Many of us do not use wire because it can prevent the amount of hits that you would get as you do with just mono leaders. Sometimes you lose an $8.00 Yozuri, like I did the other day, or another lure of cost. But, we accept that while improving our chances at more attempts at the big ones. Just watch the guys who catch the most fish, then imitate somewhat the type of leaders they use where you go visit. Then adjust to what you like in the changes to the leader to where it suits you.Slappie wrote: Hey Lomax!
I am a rookie that's why I asked!Trying to learn before I get there don't have alot time to be there only a week a year.

Good eduMacation there Lomax, I too will have to switch from wire leaders. In fact I bought a spool of 80lb mono and the little sleeves to make my own leaders and when I fish with lures, I spool with 30lb test firewire.
I saw also on the news that the winds should be dying down by wednesday. So all you diehard fishermen can enjoy the wind today and tomorrow, I'll be back next week

leaders
Hey bluerunner, try to get away from the whole leader idea. If you have to use any, use 30lb tied directly to your line. Sleaves and heavy leaders distract from your bait and have too much drag in the water. Your lures will not work properly. If the water is dirty and you are using bait, then maybe you can get away with those leaders. I know it hurts to think about the cost of losing a lure, but the results are well worth it.

In Summer a group of us Kayak Fish the 120 Ledge in Lake Worth off the pier, when conditions allow us to get out that far. Most popular way is to use Speed Jigs or Butterfly Jigs. Aty like $15 a throw loosing em really, really hurts.
http://www.anglerscenter.com/lures_butterfly_jig.htm
One way I have found to compromise is this...
Line to 70# Barrell Swivel...As small as possible From there I use sureflon or Tygerwore knottable leader, camo color. Can tie any knot you can with Mono and it does not impedee the action of the lure. I only use 6" of knottable though....just enough to keep the jaws away from my line.
I get a few less hits, but far, far more than single strand wire.....but without it, I'm getting cut EVERY Time with the bigger kings.
I have not yet tried this with Macs, but when I am out and they are running, I wil sacrifice a bite just to try it. I bet it works well.....
I would double surgeon a 6" piece in front of the lure....see what happens.
Personally, I would rather loose lures and catch macs.....Unless I am deep dropping $15.00 speed jigs.

Ive used big diamond jigs instead of the $$$ lures when the kings are there and bite everything. They work well and are not expensive at all, and I have some small ones for the macks when they come by in schools and jig them up at the piers, and are far less expensive than even spoons.
I tried the #80 mono, and the fish cut it too and never saw much of a difference than using #30 for actually landing the fish. They cut either one at the hit right off the bat, and if the lure/leader survives the first hit then usually I land them, so I just use the #30 leader (or even the #20 leader for the macks) since its easier to use and re-rig if necessary, and the heavier leaders dont mesh well with the #12 line or braid.
Anyone know where to buy the flea rakes? I couldnt find them at Bass Pro this weekend.

Yes, I had a little extra time today and ran over to anglins for half an hour this morning. This is what I witnessed. I among the other fishers caught a 2 to 3 lb bluefish, saw 4 or 5 landed. 1 spanish and some guy named Marcus had a serious grover maybe 10 lbs. in the cooler. Marcus was kind enough to give me a "lure tamer" his own invention. Thanks again. Oh saw a nice pomp landed as well. TIGHT LINES!!!

... His Grove was about 6 pounds. Not 10. The Bluefish were on and off, better in the morn. There was no current, so anything came thru and went off. There were 3 Pomps that were keeper, 1 by me, and the other 2 by my friends. I caught 2 Macks, and seen another. Snappers are around, but many small. Cadillac brought an undersise Cobe to the pier. That is about it. I was therejighead wrote:Yes, I had a little extra time today and ran over to anglins for half an hour this morning. This is what I witnessed. ... They mesh together fine, if you double the lighter line before doing the knot. I can use 6 to 80 if I wanted to and all would be fine. I always double the line from the real in my knots. It is double the strength.Bleedin' Fingers 'Nanner wrote:and the heavier leaders dont mesh well with the #12 line or braid.

what kind of knot you use for the double line? I do this sometimes when i don,t use a leader i use my line doubled but as a leader ...[/quote]linesider wrote:[quote="Lomax

I have really not doubled my line - But a uni to uni works awell as does a double surgeons when going lasrger to smaller diameter. However I have heard the doubling makes for a far stronger knot as well.
I also am curious, what is the best way to double, as I tie heavy mono to lighter braid often when trying to achieve max distance with very light arti's?

... My personal opinion,.. braid is trash. I say that because I just do not like it. It is fine for heavy duty offshore. That is just how I feel about it. When I say double the line when tying your knot to the leader, I mean the line from your reel. I do so with all spinners 25lb and under. With braid, do not bother. Doubling the line strengthens your knot. Remember the past when you casted once and your entire rig popped off when your knot broke? This is what shall prevent that. It is very simple. I also use a bimini on "all" spinners, and that is what I use for my double knot to the leader or swivel. My leaders to the swivel and hook are also doubled if 25lb and under. This is only my personal preference. It has been great so far. Try it a few times. There is no interference with fish scaring off from taking the bait or kure. It is also a shock absorber and helps out when handlining a fish up from the pier, because it has a bit of spring to it and gives you a little more chance of preventing the fish from just falling off because the line in your hand has some give to it.

Good info - not to defend braid, but it has it's applications in sutuational use.Lomax wrote:... My personal opinion,.. braid is trash. I say that because I just do not like it. I didnt mean to get a debate going on braid. I really meant that the #80 mono leader is not good for me because I like to put about 5' of leader on, and the #80 know wont real in past the guides. #80 mono is like rope and hard to tie to braid (the one time I tried it), and forget about floro because it costs so much.

Got there 6:45am, little wind...saw ballies getting crushed on both sides. Caught one 24" mack had 3 cuts(20lb fluero leader). Also had 13" mutton pick up the Gotcha and about a 2# jack..... Saw several more under sized muttons landed, and a bunch of small runners. Sorry no pics, forgot the camera, but a pier employee spray painting "no bait cutting" saw the mack....not many anglers at all....left a 9am
