haulover is really big on permit during the summer and early fall if u can get thru the crowd of googans. ive seen people take 10 big permit of different sizes. now really, who can chew up 10 permit 20 inches and over? thats too much fish for anyone. even the bag limit now is too much. 2 permit is good enough, but like its known to be, those guys out there dont care about no limits. sometimes i wonder if every fwc officer out there is really comitted to their jobs?

Yeah the bag limit is 6 for pompano and permit only 1 only 20 inches . Besides lower the limits and what does it do not a thing. The lawbreakers will still take over their limit. As far as FWC doing their job you are odviously uninformed on them. They have maybe 3 -4 officers covering all of Dade county 3 -4 if no one is sick on vacation or on light duty forgot to mention in court. Throw in the fact that they have to patrol the water as well along with the shoreline plus freshwater and you should get the point. If they were every brought up to the 6 - 8 officers that should be working in Dade alone then things would be diffferent. Understaffed and underfunded and it makes it hard to do your job at all. I am friends with a few of them and it is frustrating for them as well as they know the spots but getting the time to check them is a different story. Save their number to your phone and call when you see violators , give a good description of who and what is happening. You may have to do this a few times before an officer is avalible and is able to actually catch them but that one time will make a difference.

i believe you. i didnt know that they were to cover large areas undermanned by land and sea. that sucks. u cant do much, but i guess every little ticket counts especially if the officers make it hurt.( i mean but upping the citation) :thumleft: i know that if it were me getting a 500 fine, that'll be that last time i take more than the legal limit or undersized fish. go for it rebel, it might work out for u and u just might enjoy give out those mogan tickets :biglaugh: . i heard the training is up in tallahassee or somewhere up there for like 6 months.

Snapper you think they just let these areas get abused so they don't have to work. Most FWC officers are under paid and and no hope of getting a a decent raise. They either really love the ocean and want to protect it or its the only law enforcement job they can get into at the time and know if they do well in a few years they will be working for a regular police department.
Lack of enforcement leads to more poaching as the odds of getting caught are less. in my opinion there is much more enforcement on the water than land for coastal saltwater fish. they know that a good find won't be just giving guy a ticket a couple undersized snapper but some one with a much larger violation or possibly a major poacher. Larger fines and people that can pay them. Most of the guys in trucks in are going after hunters which are targeting federally protected and regulated species and bass fisherman without license. lots of money to be made. All in all they are way underfunded and you have to be really commited to the job for little pay.

SPEAR EM Intresting opinions but wrong. FWC officers are required to spend x amount of time on the water and x amount on land during their shifts. A short snapper on land is a short snapper on a boat same fine same paper work. Difference being on land they are so much easier to get than in a boat. Most that I have dealt with in a working enviorment seem dedicated to stopping poaching no matter where but are simply overwelmed. On a personal level is a different matter i.e. when I am fishing. There must be a thousand spots in Dade county alone on land that are poached daily. 2 cops 1 thousand spots what would you do ?

FF - you may be right but it seems I see them more often on the water or out west. I'm not in the field or know any personnally but just reporting what I see. I wish they would check harbor house more often. They could right some nice tickets. The good thing is I didn't see many spearfisherman this year on the north side but that may be due to the fact that they are enforcing the park sunset rule.
It was funny when I was shrimping and they asked me if I knew the limits. I guess being the only gringo on the bridge makes me stand out. I must say though shrimping on the bridge with my latino friends is a blast. Everyone is super cool and I have a great time.

From what i can see FWC officers are pretty clueless when it comes to fish, and fishing laws.

I was once stopped in homestead while snook fishing in a very remote brackish water canal (more like a ditch)with 2 friends .The officer had an attitude and asked all for our licenses.I told him we were snook fishing and didnt need them.(i had a snook stamp and a saltwater, but no freshwater license, and i left my wallet at home ) My other 2 friends has no fishing license.

He tried to write me a ticket and i told him to shove it up his arss in a friendly way. Fishing from a fixed structure in brakish water requires no license.
He argued that the water was completley fresh, and a license IS REQUIRED when fishing for snook in brakish water.

Straight from the fwc website

"You do not need a license if you are":

"Any resident fishing in saltwater from land or from a structure fixed to the land.

"Any resident fishing for a saltwater species in fresh water from land or from a structure fixed to land."
I didnt receive a ticket but my friends received warnings.
Some of the other officers ive seen cant even identify groupers without looking in a handbook.

Ive also met a couple really nice guys who let me fish in a place i was not sapposed to on thanksgiving after i had already made a 2 mile hike to get there.Lots of snook that day!

Snook and Tarpon are biting at slack tide, lots of bait at night outside the shadows of the bridge in the light.

Just so that I understand, (because I am quite clueless in this). When DO you need a license to fish? Only if you're on a boat that doesn't have a license for all anglers on board and for fresh water? But from piers, jetty's or anything attached to land it's ok? What about surf fishing if you go into the water to cast? or wading for flats fishing?
I have a saltwater and freshwater license with a snook permit, but was told after I had bought it, that I wasted my money.
Any ideas?

www.google.com see if you can find the info google is very helpful, but what i was trying to say was that my wife read yesterday that you dont need a license to fish BUT if you plan on keeping any fish then you need to have a fishing license in you possesion. but then again what she read could be wrong. just check diffrent web searches and see what you find im interested too. I would say to everyone just get a fishing license anyway, the money goes to research of fish so its for a good cause

http://myfwc.com/License/Saltwater_Lice ... al.htm#Rec
Recreational Saltwater Fishing License

You do not need a license if you are:

Any child under 16 years of age.
Any resident who is a member of the United States Armed Forces and not stationed in this state, when home on leave for 30 days or less, upon submission of orders.
Any person fishing who has been accepted as a client for developmental disabilities services by the Children and Family Services, provided the department furnishes proof thereof.
Any resident fishing in saltwater from land or from a structure fixed to the land.
Any person fishing from a for-hire vessel (guide, charter, party boat) that has a valid vessel license.
Any person fishing from a vessel, the operator of which has a valid vessel license issued in the name of the operator of the vessel.
Any person who holds a valid saltwater products license (SPL).
Any person fishing for recreational purposes from a pier that has been issued a valid pier saltwater fishing license.
Any resident fishing for a saltwater species in fresh water from land or from a structure fixed to land.
Any resident fishing for mullet in fresh water who has a valid Florida freshwater fishing license.
Any resident 65 years of age or older who has in her or his possession proof of age and residency or a no-cost Florida Resident Senior Citizen license. A no-cost license may be obtained from any tax collector's office upon proof of age and residency and must be in the possession of the resident during hunting, freshwater fishing, and saltwater fishing activities.
Any employee of the commission who takes freshwater fish, saltwater fish, or game as part of employment with the commission, or any other person authorized by commission permit to take freshwater fish, saltwater fish, or game for scientific or educational purposes.

It doesnt say anywhere here that you cannot keep the fish you catch if you don't have a license.

As far as purchasing a license even if exempt, here is the URL:

http://myfwc.com/docs/LicensesPermits/E ... Exempt.pdf
Saltwater Fishing Licenses:
Working to Conserve Florida’s Marine Resources
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s mission is to manage Florida’s fish
and wildlife resources for their long-term well being and the benefit of people. Every license
sold contributes to this mission and provides the public with outstanding marine recreational
opportunities. Purchasing a saltwater fishing license, even if you are exempt, will help support
valuable programs such as Fisheries Research and Management, Fisheries and Artificial Reef
Enhancement, Law Enforcement, and Education.
Law Enforcement
The Division of Law Enforcement receives
funding from licenses to protect Florida’s
aquatic resources and resource users. FWC
officers are responsible for enforcing state
boating, fish, and wildlife laws. They also
have the authority to enforce all federal fish
and wildlife laws. Visit http://myfwc.com/law/
for more information.
Marine Fisheries Research
This is a critical component of maintaining
sustainable fish stocks and habitats (in addition
to resource protection). Since knowing how to
properly manage and protect our resources
begins with understanding how our resources
work, saltwater license funding supports
applied research studies of marine species such
as common snook, spotted seatrout, and tarpon.
Visit http://research.myfwc.com/ for more
information.
Marine Fisheries Enhancement
Research on marine fisheries stock enhancement
allows biologists to focus on the breeding and
rearing of game fish to improve or rebuild
fisheries stocks. Almost one third of the license
revenues are directed toward stock enhancement
programs. To date, approximately six million
redfish and 42 thousand snook have been
released in Florida’s coastal waters. Visit
http://www.floridamarine.org/features/view_artic
le.asp?id=7137 for more information.
Artificial Reef Enhancement
License revenues also support artificial reef
enhancement. This program provides technical
aid and financial assistance to coastal
municipalities and qualified non-profit
organizations to develop, evaluate, and monitor
public artificial reefs. Under this program,
hundreds of artificial reefs have been deployed
in state waters. Visit our Artificial Reef Web
page for more information:
http://myfwc.com/marine/ar/index.asp.
Fisheries Management
Through public workshops, fisheries managers
relay information collected from the various
programs to recreational boaters and anglers.
These public workshops provide stakeholders
with the opportunity to comment on upcoming
marine fisheries issues. Fisheries managers
use the information gathered at the public
workshops to provide FWC’s commission with
recommendations about changing saltwater
fishing regulations and creating management
plans. Visit http://MyFWC.com for scheduled
workshops.
Education
A small portion of license revenues are directed
toward educating and informing resource users
about all the available programs. The goal is to
use science as a foundation to increase the
public’s participation in the management and
preservation of Florida’s marine resources.
Publications, posters, and Fishing Lines
Magazine all use the knowledge gained from
years of research to better inform resource users
about Florida’s fascinating and valuable marine
resources. For Outreach and Education events or
for more information, please visit
http://myfwc.com/marine/outreach/calendar/ind
ex.htm or call (850) 488-6058.
For more information about saltwater fishing licenses and how to purchase them, please visit
Web site http://myfwc.com/license.
Please let me know where your wife saw the law regarding licenses needed for possesion of fish, maybe what I saw is not fully comprehensive.

Do you really fish for lobster? I have never met anyone who does. How is it done?
Don't worry, I won't steal your ideas, as I keep kosher, and therefore cannot eat lobster. If I catch fish, it's strictly to eat, otherwise back it goes.
