THIS TAKES MY BREATH AWAY
Imagine the smartest person you have ever met in your entire life. I mean like who is the single most brilliant mind that has ever crossed your path? Know who it is? Absolute bush league. There are some minds living in this world today that are as huge as the universe!
Just imagine that on March 2, 2004 a bunch of really smart guys first built and then launched a rocket named Rosetta. And it flew for ten friggin years! At 41,000 MPH!!!!!! Thats three hundred and eleven million miles. Gotta stop here for a second. That was three hundred and eleven million miles. Even better.....Rosetta was off chasing a comet that's 2 1/2 miles across. The comet is traveling at 24,000 MPH lol.
Well, today Rosetta arrived. After ten years of travel this comet lander named Philae (pronounced fillet lol) detached and then FELL for seven hours. Imagine how far it was away from the comet to free fall in space for seven hours. And then it landed!!!!!! Where it was supposed to!!!!!
You just have to take a second and acknowledge this. Can you imagine the perfection that was involved here? And better yet that men today actually first dreamed of something like this and then achieved it. Using ten year old technology? I am so humbled and at the same time I'm hopeful. If there are minds on our earth today that can do something like this I'm sure one day cancer like polio was when I was a kid will one day be a memory.
Well, it got my attention anyway

Those old queen slave owners that wrote our Constitution 200 years ago were brilliant.

It is truly amazing. I'm impressed that it worked from a mechanical perspective. Makes you wonder what technologies may exist

You're a very deep cat bud. This thing IS indeed amazing. It's funny to fathom how far the last 20 years (not even a century) has done to change how we view everything... I am young cat, relatively, yet I still remember dial up internet, and now at my house I am at 150MbPS (to put it all in perspective) LIGHT years ahead. There is SO much math and SO many variables which affected them being able to ACTUALLY pull this off, it is simply too much for me to try to comprehend. Humbled is indeed the correct term for this feat, that although technical and ingenious, allows the human spirit of exploration to shine through. Just awesome.

Re: THIS TAKES MY BREATH AWAY
Update: after a bounce that lasted two hours (!), Philae may have landed on its side or even be vertical. Also, since it was off the surface for so long, while the comet rotated, it is nowhere near the target site.
Nonetheless, still absolutely awe inspiring.
I'm hoping they use the harpoons to right it, because that would be pretty metal.

... but they still can't make a copier that doesn't jam!
But seriously, awesome indeed. It just brings the question to mind, what's the smartest animal out there after man? It's not even close. There's more at work in human-kind than say, a chimp or a dolphin.

I wish our mankind act together and spend more effort on this kinda of real things out there, instead of creating SW-delusive virtual worlds where our kids or next generation are most-likely going to be in prison...

Nilsen it's just got to be my advanced age. I knew the name was noteworthy in your post but I just couldn't place it..........until I just saw his picture on the front page of the Sun Sentinel. I knew the story but couldn't connect the name. Yes, the selfless work that man has done in total antonimity for so long is absolutely humbling. Where do these people come from?Rare wrote:I am too..... Arnold AbbottKingofthesea wrote: I am so humbled and at the same time I'm hopeful.

Re: THIS TAKES MY BREATH AWAY
I'm always astounded by the fact that we have a SPACE STATION and that we regularly fly space ships up to it to take actual astronauts back and forth. When there's a launch, I'm yelling at people "They're launching a SPACESHIP!"
The things that NASA can do on a regular day-to-day basis boggle the mind.
