Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
TLDs are not really made for casting. Jig master cast about as far as most other reels on the right rod and weight. Let me know if you want to pick up trolling gear I've got some for sale.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

I have a TLD 15 spooled w/30 lb on an 8 1/2 foot Fenwick, casts pretty well for me. However the larger TLD's are not very good for casting. As far as a pier reel well under $200.00 I would rate the TLD 15 as a VERY good buy. More guts, faster and a nice drag and easier to cast than the Jigmaster. If you can pick up the TRQ which is the same size reel (from Shimano) only with a star drag, even better. Just my opinion.

Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
right on... the post is really two separate questions... im interested in TLDs for the boat and trolling or jigging i have read....but as for the pier i wasnt thinking tld but open to ideas for distance casting i need to get out farther and i cast pretty good but i know i can go further with the right equipment. i would really like to go to a football field that is painted and see just how far i cast each rod and reel set up with diff weights and wind

Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
Depends on what you want to cast and how educated your thumb is. I have a penn 525 mag. Not too difficult with bait and lead, or a jig/spoon. I wouldn't want to toss plugs into a stiff wind at night with it though. No longer made and the ones sold in the UK had a superior adjustment sytem. Been replaced by the squall. If your thumb isn't as educated, or you plan to do more plug casting, I'd look for an older, made in sweden, ABU. They are a much easier reel to cast. Daiwa SLOSH is another one to consider. Both the Penn and Daiwa have enough guts/drag to be used on the boat. The ABU is minimal although I have caught my fair share of kingfish and mutton on a 70's vintage ABU 6500.
The other reels you mention aren't casting reels. They are trolling reels that happen to cast okay.
Adding extra magnets to the 525 isn't a bad idea even for a seasoned caster. I'd also stick with mono. It is what I'd call "wickedly fast"....meaning able to cast a longgggggg ways but easy to birds nest. Consider yourself warned. Other than that, a great reel with way more balls than first appearance would suggest. MUCH better drag/gears than your jigmaster.
The TLD has always offered good value. I wouldn't buy the larger ones (over 15 size) as the frame is too weak to handle high drag settings. These days you can buy a more modern reel for a few more bucks and come out ahead. I have, and like, the Avet LX for our waters as a general purpose trolling reel.

Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
tdimaniac is right on.
Look at the Penn Squall 12 and 15 and the Daiwa SL-H and Daiwa Sealine X-SHA reels.
The Penn Squall 12 and 15 have externally adjustable magnetic brakes. The Daiwas have mechanical, internal centrifigal brakes. These reels are designed for distance casting. Both designs work well but the reels with adjustable magnetic brakes are the easiest to use.
I have a Penn Squall 15 for sale on ebay right now. Starting bid is $100.
My main pier reel is the Daiwa Sealine X50-SHA. I'm a monofilament guy and that reel holds alot of mono. The Squalls are smaller and are mainly used by the braid guys.

Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
you can cast almost any conventional far as long as yu set the drag properly before casting. to loose and birds nest to tight and no distanceyou want to the spool to spin at the same speed the line is going out technically

Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
yeah see i messed with the tension on my 500hs jig and well has nothing but crank issues and casting issues since.. i actually nested horribly last night and cut every last piece of that crappy momoi line off my reel. there was no way it was coming out i blew it out.. i tightened up after and respooled cheap 30 lb and wow way better than the momoi go figure... i never really had nest issues with my jigs til i did that... and my thumb is pretty skilled considering i have no tendon between my web from a bull riding accident lol. tequila ranch then i reinjured it andi have to use the crank as leverage for my index to give the thumb more stability, however it has not hindered me too badly... keith im sure remembers seeing me at anglins with my hand wrapped when my ex slammed my hand in the door... heh but it has gotten better and im confidant in my skills on casting conventional...just need the right setup basically....i have found i throw better with the jigs with 6 ounce and my thunnus spinner heavy as it is i fling farther than that with a or 4 ounce.. i am gonna try five on the thunnus tonight. thats on a 9 foot pole. and the long butt i put to use the other night more than usual and i was getting her way out but still not to buoy. i dunno hwo far out i was getting the other night cause it was so damn dark out... but i figure if i dont hear the splash down its a decent cast
oh and im not a big braid guy myself...id hate to burn my thumb with braid on a slip or bad throw.. OWWWWWWWWWWW bye bye skin hello bone...no thanks..maybe braid below and top shot of good mono for casting.
example my red old school jigmaster had 30lb on it...but i got snagged up bad on the boat and lost half of it or more so i put 50 on it and it casts just fine... looks like a nest at times but i control it fine so no big deal....feels good and for heavy line iwas putting it out there pretty good.... what if i just got longer rods for the jigs should help some. no?
im sure theres points i wanted to make to the rest of what you guys said but im at work in the dj booth so i may have gotten overwhelmed reading all this... im gonna research all this stuff today while it is slow at the club...

Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
dudei got pink ande 20 on my spinners and momoi blue 30 on my conv. 4 reels all of them snap at every knot i tie no matter the knot.. i spooled them at basspro... and both spools of line i paid like 27 bucks or something to spool all four reels and the liens snapped and broke at the slightest pull of my knots... never had that issue til i bought those to lines from BP... HORRIBLE. takes 10 knots at times to get a good one that wont break.. i have replaced half the reels lines

Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
Clarence, too much thought! get what u want but a TLD15 will work great for pier as well as boat for what. . $129.00 or $139.00. You were point on with braid backing. As Rare said 150 yd of mono on top. Since you fish Anglins regularly. You only have to re spool 150yd of mono when your line gets scarfed. Economical. Accurates, Avets etc. forget about it. Get the TLD or similar and then you can start upgrading your rods. Quality rods suited to the type of fishing you are doing will make a lot of difference. A more expensive reel will NOT make you a better caster. Go online and research fishing knots! You can get by in most situations with 3 or 4 knots if you learn to tie them well. Rare and all of the other guys on here who have been where you are (myself included) have all had roomfuls of tackle that we wound up selling off 'cause it was crap or just not right for what we were doing. Except for Chris, he was born a fisherman. Good luck.

Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
I have a tld 15 paired with an 8ft rod that I use when fishing the keys. Casting works good, granted a 9ft rod will provide better distances and handle bigger fish like rare says. I also only use ande pink on all my reels. Momoi leader is good however.

Re: thinking bout picking up TLD reels/also casting for pier
keith i totally agree expense doesnt make it better. more or less i know i can cast quite well i was actually ripping the jig last night but couldnt see how far.. i know i surpassed my top shot...and like we spoke of before if you can cast a jigmaster you can cast anything...i just want something more suited for long distance to increase my distancei already have...in essence more distance and cast friendly is my point... good point on tld 15 for both uses and with the mono on top no burns:) cant beat boat and pier reel for that price and quality. i wish i had had the money to pick up that custom when you offered it.. i liked that rod a lot:)
i usually stick with 3 or 4 knots actually: uni of course, trilene i like a lot cause the double hoop, just learned palomar, love albrights, uni to uni as well...and your typical clinches. i do have a hard time since the thumb injury but i manage fairly well
