Re: COBIA!!!!!!!
The rod is to short. Pier fishing cobia down here relies a lot on outcasting the other fisherman and using jigs. I would say a rod of at least 8 -9 ft is needed to be successful at it.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Re: COBIA!!!!!!!
Haha most the cobia fisherman in NC fish boats exclusively or fish the more northern piers, so
if anyone sees a crusing cobia they scream shark (beach bums on the pier) and purposely pull their rods out of the water!! if they see a ray pod or a turtle they just stair in aw.

Re: COBIA!!!!!!!
Lol most of the pier rats down here have an unwritten code first one to call the fish gets first shot at it. After first cast it is a free for all. I use a 9 ft custom rod with extra large foul proofs and a VS 250 with 65 lb. braid and a 3-5 ft 60 lb leader.

Re: COBIA!!!!!!!
NC piers are under full control of king mack fisherman so there really isn't an option of fishing the end of the pier so im going to fish under rays.

Yes, they call them "Pin-Riggers" up here in NC.NCPierRat wrote:NC piers are under full control of king mack fisherman so there really isn't an option of fishing the end of the pier so im going to fish under rays.
First, a heavy anchor weight is cast out and secured. The, a second rod is used with the bait leader clipped to a slider attached to the anchor line. the bait is then slid down the line. When a fish strike the clip releases and the fight is on !
In Hawaii, they call it "Slide-Bait Fishing" and go after HUGE ULUA using that technique. Usually, the bait is "TAKO" ( a live Octopus )...
