You dont need to lock it full on the cast control but you set it up as whatever the current is calling for. If Current is kicking you'll tighten down on it or current is slow you'll loosen it...you can preset it to never touch it again if you want as well. If im using it on the boat i like it cause i set it to let the line down at a good rate. Too many people try to reach bottom quick and will helicopter their bait on the way down.

why did you even need a free spool lever why not just loosen the drag ?

I am sure you know what incorrect drag setting can do...
Well, for your heavy shark fishing gear, you don't have to worry about... You can do whatever you want...
The only limitation would be strength of your body...lol
