Blacktips - 3/14/10 -I love Day Light Savings

Post by Snook hunter »

I hit the beach on Sunday (3/14/10) from 7p to 9pm. It’s my first time shark fishing by myself and my 1st time ballooning baits out. I had a west wind and didn’t expect too much action with my frozen bait. Took me about 10 min. to get the 1st balloon to even move after I casted it out, however once it went out another 10 yards the wind picked it up. The balloon started moving NORTH and went UNDER. I thought I had some new type of issue I never experience before. It took a few seconds to sink in. Shark on!!! Largest Blacktip I ever had on. Jumped at least 5 times and popped my main line of 65lb after 10 min.

Tied on another balloon and got the bait in the zone in 5 min. Shark on!!!! Broke my # 140# wire in about 5 min., same thing happen with shark #3 after about 10min.

Went to the bag for another balloon and realized I didn’t have any more. You may have heard me screaming. Put a larger chunk of bait on with no sinker and casted it out. Shark on in about 5 min. and landed the shark after about 10 - 15 min. I was by myself so I gave my rod to a person that was nearby and had no idea what was going on since it was dark out by this time. Pulled it up, took a photo, cut the wire and dragged in back. I was so tired from the previous fish and running up and down the beach for camera, then de-hooker that did not work and then cutter that I though I cut the wire. The fish took off and the innocent bystander was holding the rod. She almost pooped her pants. Reeled it back in, cut the wire and sent him to the deep.

Went back the following night with friends since they thought it was worth going now. Stopped and bought some balloons first. I landed the 1st two Blacktips and then lost one when my line got tangle with a buddy’s balloon.

New Jersey Bill II was on for about 15 min. with his brand new custom Lami with 30# braid and lost the shark. The wire came in with a big spiral in it and the hook gone.

Another buddy showed up and I gave him my rod. He hooked up with 3 and landed one.

Went back with Reel Cast on the 17th and casted out bait, since the west wind was now gone. Reel Cast had a shark on before we could put the rod in the spike. He had the fish on my back up rod with 50lb braid on a Penn 704z, 60% of the line was out and the fished snapped the main line. The wire was not an issue since I upgraded to 174#.

I casted out my larger reel and stout rod and put in the spike for Reel Cast and the rod came out of the spike, slammed into the sand, and was heading into the water. I thought Reel Cast would have been fast since he is now a runner; however I had to dive for the rod. Not realizing it, I dove on the knife and fresh bloody Bonita that we were using that night. NO GUTS – NO GLORY – NO INJURY

Casted out the smaller rod again and he was on! He was pumping the rod, running up the beach, keeping the tip up with no slack and the 80lb shock leader snapped. Sorry to say the next shark snapped the shock leader on the other rod. It was not meant to be - 4 large hook ups and runs in about 1.25 hours.

Until next time!

My buddy lost his Croc in the sand when he needed to move and lost his balance. Actually, it was not a big deal, the photo was taken at the right time to show some action and now having some fun at my friends expense with this photo. He will not live it down!

I once had a wardrobe malfunction during the return of a Blacktip at night. I lost my glasses in the water and could not see. Not funny - NOT FUNNY - I have been meaning to teather them on. No rush, I will get to it next year.
