Sharkin 2/14-2/15

I wanted to pass along a few pictures of the 7 spinner sharks that I caught this past weekend. While I grew up in South Florida, I now live in Chicago, so I jump at the chance to pull on anything other than a Walleye. I sure wasn't disspointed this past weekend, the sharks were everywhere and they were chewing.

What are the distinguishing characteristics of the spinners vs the blacktips

The anal fin has a black tip on Spinners, it does not on Blacktips.

Those are all Blacktips, the dorsal fin is too tall. You cannot distinct between blacktips and spinners by the anal fins, younger Blacktips have spots on their anal fins.

Thanks for the info on blacktip vs. spinner. I had no idea. Do both of them jump the same or is it only the spinners that jump and spin when hooked? There were several sharks caught on the pier and they did not appear to jump so maybe they were blacktips. Thank you again for the information.

Yes you can distinguish adults by the anal fin (in juveniles it is not a reliable characteristic). Blacktips do not have a black "tip" on the anal fin and spinners do not. Another distinguishing characteristic is if you draw a line from the leading edge of the dorsal fin down to the pec fin the line will intersect the middle of the pec fin in a blacktip and it will be in line with the front of the pec fin in a spinner.
