Please help me out. I need to order some line for my spinning gear before I leave for my trip. I have been looking at spectra line, but it is expensive. Then I found some line called "dacron". It is cheaper than spectra, but I can't figure out what the difference is. Would I be better off paying more for the spectra or is the dacron just as good?

if i were you, id go with the spectra instead. dacron is real tough and strong, but i believe you wouldn't get the line capacity as oppose to spectra. yes, it is expensive and you sometimes have to remove the line due to it rubbing on sand and rocks in some cases. but the capacity of it is the big point. 1000yds of spectra or 650yds of mono if your using a 9/0. if so, go with the braid so you at least have the possibility of landing a giant beast. but if you got 12 or 14/0, use the mono. and if you decide to go with braid spectra, put a 100lb test on it or even 130 if you still think you'll have a 1000yds or more.

On your spinner all you need is 65lb test power pro.

All I gotta say is 65# powerpro is tuff ass line. Just use it and find out.

I am mainly fishing for sharks, but I am not picky. I will fish for anythig that bites really. I will be surf fishing and fishing from the jettys.

I would not use dacron on your spinner for sharks. It is thicker then spectra and doesn't cast well. Like said, I would spool that up with 65 lb powerpro and put a 50 yard topshot of heavier mono. This will help prevent your braid from being abraded on the sand and shells.

does it have to be 65lb braid? i thought 30 - 50 was enough.

I only mentioned 65# cuz I use it on my jumbo fish rods. Others work fine too. Don't underestimate good 20#mono too.

X; Surf is the last place you want to use braid from. Sand cut's the fibers that make up the braid and shorten it's useable life. Like Rory said a mono top shot will help prevent this but there is no stopping it. Initially it will be fine but the more you use it the weaker it will get. The Spectra braid seems to be the best of both worlds. I say seems because I have not used it my self. It has a high line cap. along with very good abrasion resistance. While it's more expensive it lasts longer which makes it economical in the long run, Dacron is more of a trolling line or a backing than a primary line. It's heavy and sucks to cast. It boils down to how much you can spend for what you want. Personally I'm going Fluorocarbon. It's lifespan makes it economical for me.

Thanks for the help guys. I went with 50# Berkley gorilla braid. It is a 14# diameter lime, so I should be able to get plenty on my spinning rig.

What reel are you planning on using?

I am using two quantom spinning reels, and a diawa for catching bait.

One of them is an 80 on an 8ft rod and I am not sure what size the other one is, but it is big, and it is on a 10ft surf rod.

With 50lb braid you will have enough line on the 80

That is good to hear. I was worried about the amount of line I was going to be able to use. If I hook a bigger fish that starts running, I want to have as much line as possible.

If you hook a big fish just forget about it, you won't stand a chance. You'll be able to handle small to medium size sharks.

It's funny to hear this, thats what i was saying a while back, then you actually catch one and your expectations get higher and higher....And then it gets to the point where you sit on the computer your whole summer vacation either looking for fishing gear, or fishing(true story). Suddenly the 4/0 got for your B-day is starting to seem small! Once you get bit by the bug, theres no cure, it spreads quickly, and the only thing that makes the pain go away is getting out there and fishing some more! You my friend, are well on your way there, if not there already!

Well that was deep! But true, im 14, and i have the disease, and it hurts when you cant be out there, but the feeling you get when your do go out there, when your sweating, pinned to the edge of a rail is like no other! This is both a warning and/or an introduction, remember, the best addiction is still an addiction!

Didnt mean to derail the thread, just wanted to get that out there!
