call eddie - get him to send you a fed ex label to your house - send the reel to him - have him spool it with 600yds of 130lb JB hollow core and splice in 100lb mono - tell him you spoke to me (dustin isenhour) and see if he will send you a remnant length of the hollow core and a 100lb hollow rigging needle so you can play around with it and learn to do your own splices - it isnt that hard but you need to learn on something besides the reel your going to depend on until you do.snookabuser wrote:Alrighty. you saw my reel and thats close to how i have it set up. you should do this asap so you can get your rod/reel together and be able to set up your drag preset - im sure someone on here close by can help you with that.

Re: Avet 50 wide 2 speed? yay or nay?
It depends where you fish. Top shot is not a set in stone kind of thing. You can have it as long or short as you want. I do not use a mono top shot. I use a 25-30 yards 300lb wind on plus 7-8ft wire leader. It works for me on the bridge pilings. If you are fishing off the beach you might need a long top shot with a short wind on and wire leader. One the beach the reef and sand is your enemy. There is no wrong in this. Just make sure your top shot is not lighter then your test pound braid is rated at.snookabuser wrote:Alrighty. The beach I shark fish at dosent have a big reef on it. 100 lb braid. 130 lb mono. And then what do you mean a wind on leader?bolo wrote:It depends where you fish. Re: Avet 50 wide 2 speed? yay or nay?
your "top shot" SHOULD be rated LOWER than your mainline is rated for - if the line becomes overstressed it will break in the top shot and not your main line - braid is too expensive to lose alot of and you dont want a shark swimming around with several hundred yards of line attached to it - pretty much a death sentence for the shark - mono topshots, even short ones are always a good idea even if they are relatively short (fishing from bridges) to act as a shock absorber in the line - braid is great stuff but cant take the "shock" that mono can because of its low stretch properties - it will help to keep from popping line at connections like splices and knots. the long mono section you are referring to is your leader which your bite section of cable or wire is a part of - wind ons are great and easy to use but make sure you have at least a swivel in between your "heavy" mono section and your bite leader so you can at least help eliminate line twist - i would rather have a swivel connection as opposed to a wind on unless its for a casted rig just for that reason.bolo wrote:It depends where you fish. Re: Avet 50 wide 2 speed? yay or nay?
It is a mono leader you can wind on to your reel. One end has a loop connection with a hollow core braid. If you had hollow core braid you will use your rigging needles or a thin wire and make a loop connection to attach your wind on. It is something you have to do ahead of time. If you do not have hollow core braid then a 70 turn Bimini Twist will do. Do a google search for wind on leader and you will understand what we are talking about.

I agree it is not good for the shark having to drag all that leader around. That is why I stop fishing for them off the bridges.

But if you use a lower pound test line as your top shot then there is no purpose of using a higher pound test braid on your reel.[/quote]
the purpose is for the topshot to fail before the main line (braid fails). if youve got out 600yds of line in a fight with a big fish you do NOT want your braid to break and have the fish swimming around with 600yds of line attached to it - it is a death sentence for the fish. the mono topshot is to provide a shock absorber for your knots and connections without having to fish with an entire rubber band spool of mono - it should test BELOW your mainline - for example if you have 130lb braid mainline you should fish 100lb mono topshot - push comes to shove and something is going to break you want it to be in the mono topshot (shorter length than main line) to prevent losing a lot of your braid (expensive) and to protect whatever is swimming around with you line - if it breaks in the topshot it will be much less line than if it breaks in the braid meaning it has your enire topshot plus whatever braid there is up to the break. heres an example of how myself as well as many others do it from the beach as well as from charter boats.
50 lb and 80lb class reels - (9/0, 12/0, 50w, 80w)
600-700yds of 100lb+ braid main line - inline splice or PR knot to 100yd+ of mono undersized from mainline (abrasion resistance from sand bars and shock absorber for main line) -
swivel connection - 10'-30' of 500lb mono (abrasion resistance in case shark wraps up in line) -
swivel connection - 5'-10' of 480lb or higher 49strand cable or #12 to #19 wire - hook of your choice. this provides shock absorption, abrasion resistance, prevents line twist, and bite resistance for big toothy fish.

Re: Avet 50 wide 2 speed? yay or nay?
I understand what you are saying. What my point is why spend the money for 130lb braid(main line) to use a 100lb top shot? Why not just run 100lb test all the way through main line and top shot? You will only be able to set the drag for the 100lb test anyways. What is the benifit of even using a higher class test main line?

read previous post again - the explanation is there - you use a lower lb test topshot to insure that if a failure or break occurs that it is there and NOT in your main line.bolo wrote:I understand what you are saying. Got it. I would have to step up to a higher main line if I wish to use a certain class line. Sorry for my confusion.

From reading both of your opinions. 130 braid mainline. With 100 lb or 130 lb mono. The 130 lb mono because it will fray some in the sand and stuff making it like 110 or 120 . Then they always overpower or whatever the braid making it a little more? Not sure just saying some options cause I've learned so much.

if you go that route, you should be able to fit about 1000 yds of line on the 50W

all the information you need was already posted:snookabuser wrote:Perfect. And then should I tie on my own topshot?
make sure to either wax your spool with carnauba or corrosion x before you put the braid on there - if you have never done this i would highly suggest taking it to someone knowledgeable or sending it to someone to have it spooled to make sure it goes on as tight as you can get it - you will get more line on this way and insure you have no problems. make sure to order some riggin needles for the pound test topshot you are going to use for your inline splice.
if your in florida send it to eddie broussard at cabbage key rod and reel - hes an excellent guy to do business with and knows his stuff when it comes to JB hollow braid. if you send it off you can specify exactly what you want him to spool it with as far as line test and amount. eddie can splice in your topshot for you on your first go round and you will know that it is done right - he can also send you some remnant pieces for you to practive on so then your topshot needs replacing you will be able to do it yourself. the braid will last you for several years while the topshot will need to be replaced about every 6 trips or so depending on environment you are fishing in.
- trust me - call eddie.

My bad. I was thinking of just getting solid braid but I forgot. Ill call eddie and ask him to spool it up with 1000 yards of 130 lb hollow core and he'll add the 100 pound topshot ~100 yards.

you need to have him spool 600yds of 130lb JB hollow and top it off with 100lb mono with an inline splice - make sure to tell him you spoke to me (dustin isenhour) and he will know what you are using it for and how it should be done. his number is 877-257-3985. if you do this you will have no problems at all and the reel will be ready to fish and you will be able to have confidence in your gear.snookabuser wrote:My bad. Re: Avet 50 wide 2 speed? yay or nay?
On the 50W Avet with a properly set drag and 800+ yards of line you shouldn't need to worry about getting dumped. That reel is far superior to any senator and many huge sharks have been caught on 9/0-12/0 senators. Again, like Scout said earlier, if a fish has 700 yards of line out chances are you aren't going to land it anyway. The new trend with reels (Accurate, Avet, Fin Nor, Okuma, ect) is making the reels smaller, with more powerful drags, better gear ratios ect. Thus, we are able to land larger fish with smaller reels. If you would have told me 10 years ago that large bluefin tuna could be caught on spin gear, I would have laughed. However, it is done on a daily basis and I got a 180lb fish on spin last fall. Trust me, the 50W Avet is probably all you are going to need.snookabuser wrote:thanks so much for the replies. yes it is my first shark reel and i was really worried about getting dumped, it always just worries me.
And like you said bolo you have 1000 yards of 100 lb jb hollow should i do the same? but i need a topshot forsure.
In regards to terminal tackle, I would go with a 50-75 yard topshot to a 250-300lb windon leader. The topshot really doesn't need to be more than 75 yards. Many sharks won't even get you past that. I only use about 4-5ft of wire because the 250-300lb windon is more than enough abrasion resistance to protect against a shark's body. After each shark, you can check the windon for any abrasion, and if the leader is damaged just cut it back.
Good luck!

i really must not be making myself clear and i apologize if so - here are the steps.snookabuser wrote:Sure thing man ill make sure to mention you. And can I give him a 1200 yard spool and ask for 1000 yards and then the mono?
1)call eddie
2)tell him you know me
3)have him spool 600yds of 130lb JB hollow (from his stock not your won - you dont need to buy
a 1200yd spool to only spool and have 600yds laying around - you wont need to replace the
braid for several years - likely 5 or more - there is NO cost savings for you buying your own
spool - he will charge you for only what he spools)
4)have him inline splice 100lb mono and top the reel off with it
5)ask him to send back with your reel a 100lb hollow rigging needle and several remnant pieces
of 130lb JB hollow and 100lb mono for you to practice your own inline splices for future use
when you need to replace your topshot.
6)read above directions - very clear - go fish - catch fish - take pictures - post report.
crystal clear i hope - let me know how it works out.

Alright thanks man its crystal clear GREAT ADVICE. And sorry about all the confusion. I was Just thinking that I really only need like 50 yards of a topsho. So I probably will need more than 600 yards of the braid.

are you fishing from the beach, a bridge, or a boat ? do you know how to do the mathematical calculations to figure this out ? if not let me know and i will help you out. if you are fishing from the beach you will want more than 50yds for abrasion resistance from sand bars. if from a boat or a bridge i would do at least 75-100 just for the shock absorber portion of the mono's benefits.
