Hello,

This is the our 1st time at the Keys, (end of July first of August) family will be staying at Marathon, (Grassey Keys) on the Atlantic/Gulf side. The house has a 500ft. dock and want to take the kids fishing.

My question is; how should I fish? I will be taking down 3 spinning rigs medium action 6.5ft loaded with spider wire and a fluorocarbon liter. I will also have a heavy action spinning rod/reel for anything bigger?

I will have green lights for nights as well.

What kind of terminal tackle, weights, hook sizes,do I need?

What kind of bait should I use as well?

I've been lurking and reading what I can find, so any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Will these same techniques work of a dock?

Or am I wasting my time just fishing off the dock alone?

Depends on the dock. Generally dock fish get a lot of pressure. Some docks down there are great shark snapper cuda and tarpon spots others produce nothing. Depth and tide flow will determine this.

From what I understand the end of the dock is in about 5-6ft of water. We will be the only ones on the dock. If that helps?

Is it on the ocean or a canal ? Can't hurt to soak a bottom bait or drift a live shrimp under a popping cork there. If the dock is lit there may be bait there at night .

Another good idea since you will be there a few days would be a flo tru down bucket. That way you can keep some live shrimp crabs grunts or pinfish alive and ready for use

I appreciate your help...however, I was wrong about our rental house location, (I did not make the reservation), anyway we are actually on the gulf side of Grassy Key.

by the way great idea on the bait bucket.

That area will be shallow more than likely. Probably some pinfish and grunts for the kids to catch for bait. Likely some small cudas around during the day.
