New Federal Rules for Grouper, Tilefish, and Snapper

NOAA Fisheries Service recently approved Amendment 17B to the Fishery Management Plan for the Snapper-Grouper Fishery in federal waters of the South Atlantic. Amendment 17B includes establishment of annual catch limits and accountability measures for golden tilefish, snowy grouper, speckled hind, warsaw grouper, gag grouper, red grouper, black grouper, black sea bass and vermilion snapper as well as new regulations that are intended to address overfishing. The following regulations took effect January 31, 2011, in federal waters of the Atlantic Ocean:
■Harvest and retention of speckled hind and warsaw grouper is prohibited
■Harvest and retention of snowy grouper, blueline tilefish, yellowedge grouper, misty grouper, queen snapper and silk snapper beyond 240 feet in federal waters of the South Atlantic is prohibited
■The bag limit for snowy grouper is reduced from one fish per person per day to one fish per vessel per day

Charter and headboats that hold federal snapper-grouper permits are required to abide by federal rules, even in state waters.
