Shrimping in the Keys

Hey guys,
I am heading down to Big Pine key for a little R&R on May 5th for a few days. I was curious if shrimping around this time of year on the full moon would be productive in the keys? I would love to bring all my fishing gear, but I already know with the other couple we are going with, would probably be able to withstand 30 minutes of fishing and thats nothing but a tease for me. I am hoping to get on the grass flats and get some shrimp. Never shrimped in the keys, but I know they are running over here in Sarasota. Any help would be great.

ps i have the head lamp, nets, buckets etc... just wanted to know if they were running or not.

Are you using an Ozello Shrimper or are you using a normal dip net? If you are using a dip net, give the Ozello Shrimper a shot, you'll triple your catch.

Don't know if they are running in Miami but I'd give it a shot just to see. Might turn out to be a great idea!

May is the tail end but if you hit the full moon you have a chance though a slim one.
SPAATZ what do you have an alarm that alerts you when anyone posts a question about shrimping on this forum ?

Actually, I do. It's a Google alert - http://www.google.com/alerts It triggers an email summary of all shrimping related conversations across the internet summarized by day. I love shrimping so I keep up with all of them.

Most are talking about eyeless shrimp and the closure of shrimping zones in the North but this one caught my eye because it was in Florida and on a forum I like. So, I figured I would drop in.

It sounds like Miami has a similar shrimping season to the West Coast. Although, ours ends just a little bit later at the tail end of June.

I'd be interested to know if many people dip net shrimp down South too. Anyone know much about it from down South?

Thanks for the replies guys... I have not purchased one of your Ozello Shrimpers, however over here in Sarasota/bradenton area they seem to be very popular.

It actually weighs less than a heavy weight fishing pole. We made it out of marine grade aluminum to save weight. Plus, you don't need to bend over to fuss with the shrimp so it saves back pain compared to a dip net. We put a lot of thought into it over the years, that's for sure.

Not to derail the subject of the thread: Are there spots in Monroe County / Keys area where you can grass shrimp? Has anyone seen people doing it?

You'd recognize them, they walk around with handheld dip nets at night with lights on their heads, scanning the shallow water grass flats for shrimp.

There is a couPle of areas grassy key that I have seen people out there. I do like the not bending over part.
