done with Naples pier 5/10/08

I went to Naples pier today. I hooked into a shark. I was fighting it and fighting it. It was a serious pole bender. With that and every one gathering around me, here came the pier police. He stood beside as I fought it, reeling it in. He said if it was a shark I would have to cut the line. I never saw it ,but it surfaced once and people around said it was 4 feet long. Some said it was a nurse others said it was a lemon.The pier police said I could reel it until it got to the pier or started towards the beach area. I got it about 15 yards from the end of the pier and he said I had to cut the line. He cut it for me. I understand the safety reason with so many people swimming at the beach. There is a rule of no swimming with in 150 feet of the pier. Its never enforced.Basically if you can reel it up from the water,you are ok. But if you have to walk it to the beach .then you are not allowed.It was my first shark. No pic. I didnt even see it.Not to mention 65#braided line is not cheap.

I actually wasnt even targetting sharks. It just happened.He did tell me( off the record) to come at night when it was dark and I could fish for shark and nobody would say anything.
Im going to Wiggins beach On Monday night and see what happens. Ive seen alot of black tips over there.

Not all piers enforce them, but its better to do any type of shark fishing at nite

cops are always sketchy when it comes to sharks...its a Public Relations thing
