After multiple trips out to "the darkside" I finally landed my first swordfish last night around 10pm. It was out of Haulover Inlet around the 48-49 at 1600-1700' of water. The fish weighed "guesstimate" 70+ pounds 56 inches from the mouth to the fork and very fat. Fight lasted a good 40 mins before the ring of death started. Caught it on a 50 year old 6/0 with 80lb mono with a live tinker mackeral. Almost spooled me 3 times. Pics will come as soon as I get them emailed to me from Oliver the owner of the boat.

And Gus, I saved you the head as promised with bill intact, so you can add it to your "bone collection".
Marcus, I got some fillets for you as promised. I had to split the fish 5 ways but I still brought home over 10 lbs of fillets.

Sick sword Russ for your first. The strength of these beasts is unreal. Next trip out were gonna be catching about a dozen live tinkers and heading to the 48 at 16-1700 feet and dropping 2 lightly weighted live tinkers out on a balloon at a time and 2 stinky dead squids. I have a feeling the live tinkers bridled are the secret hot bait atm, and they are everywhere. My rig was (6-8 ouce sinker on a fishfinder rig with a Mighty light attached to 15 feet of 300lb leader pro crimped to a 10/0 stainless steel 2x strong hook sharpened to a fine needlepoint, deployed about 75 feet and attached to a balloon, drifted back about 50 feet from the hydro glo. phew that was a mouthfull.

this is awesome watching 1/2 my line peel out with 25lbs of drag engaged. I started with just 10lbs of drag but too much line leaving too fast ><.

Funny thing... last night when I got home from work my neighbor called and told me he was going to bring me over a swordfish filet. I am going to eat it today for lunch! That must mean it is time for me to go swording.

I haven't been out swording since Feb 2009, Its been over a year. Gio, the ATD was already out, all of our best gear was already out and drifting Rigged Squids on ballons in staggerd deph's of 50-250 ft. Then all of a sudden Oliver's friend catches a tinker mackeral that was playing around our hydro glow.

That old 6/0 with a loose rod handle was the only rod left to use . It didnt sit more then 5 mins in the rod holder, Honestly I made a quick make shift fishfinder rig with 30 ft of 300 lb leader and a 8 ounce egg weight to keep the fish down a bit in the water column.

I let about 70 yards of line out and engaged the clicker then went to grab a bottle water when the thing went off. Everyone just stared at it for a solid 4 seconds each wondering who will grab the rod, I couldn't resist and ran from the back of the boat to the rod and started cranking down on it until I came tight.

Ive made a bunch of friends up in Central Florida, North East Florida, West Florida and the Big Bend. I been to the Middle Grounds a handful of times already, even up to Jacksonville for some high speed wahoo trolling. If anyone ever wants to come up and fish lemme know. This time of year the wahoo will be going nuts in St Augistine, during the full moon. We can play catch and release on big 20 lb endangered red snappers all day in 70 feet of water here. Which is 15 miles offshore btw. The middle grounds will be filled with big grouper until the season closes, You just need a clear 2-3 day window if you plan a MG trip.

Im hoping to buy a hydra glow and do some swording at night then fish for 100lb yellowfin tuna at the 120 mile bouy during the day. One of my best friends owns a 29 foot sea vee.

i wanna see gus do up the skull and bill.. gus give me some tips on that..i have been playing around with bones latley also....
