Wierd Snakehead experience.

Was fishing a canal in Coral Springs when I hooked a snakehead on a topwater frog with a double hook. It was fighting until about halfway in...then the struggle suddenly ended. Got it to the bank and it was belly-up, dead as a door nail. The hooks were down deep but I wouldn't think that could cause it to die so abruptly. Could one have pierced it's brain? Any ideas or similar experiences?

Yup. Sounds like the hooks worked its way in to the brain. I've had that happen a few times with the smaller ones. Never with bigger ones though.

The FWC has finally come up with a secret weapon in their never ending war on snakeheads. Area snakeheads have been infected with mad snakehead disease. It is activated when they make contact with air. Either this or your years of watching BASS tournie fishermens hook sets and by copying it you broke his neck on your hookset. Way to go killer

hook set too hard or during the fight.. could go either way. I've had them die mid fight, which is what skee was referring to. Not on the hook set. I think most kills on hook sets are due to hook sizes being too big or where the hook works its way into after he strikes the lure or frog. Lodged just behind or in between the eyes, all the fish has to do is head shake violently or take a hard run and. that *could* kill it. I dont think anyone is wrong here.. just a simple misunderstanding. I swear snakeheads are cursed.. The never-ending debate.. My conversation and 2 cents ends here lol
