The Case Against Continued Development of our Barrier Beaches
Before moving here to Florida last June I lived on Cape Cod. The link below contains two aerial photos of the breach at Nauset Beach which ocurred in Chatham last Spring during a three-day nor'easter. What is not shown are the three houses that used to sit where the channel is now in the photo on the left. To the far left of the same photo is the continuation of the barrier beach which extends another two miles.
Though much smaller, like Florida, Cape Cod is a sandy peninsula. A clasic barrier beach, Nauset is 48 miles long and protects the entire east shore of Cape Cod. Most of it is within the Cape Cod National Seashore.
Think it couldn't happen here? Where this breach ocurred, Nauset was as narrow as Melbourne Beach in two locations between Indialantic and Sebastian Inlet.
