Got out this morning, around 7AM with the -.47 tide approaching about 9:30AM. I know of 2 holes that have been producing pretty well lately, and i have been fishing them a lot.
First hole i went to had lots of mullet, and lady fish. The lady-fish sure haven't let me down in the past few trips. I was catching lady-fish, and if i could get the bait lower in the water, i would get the strikes from trout, and red-fish. The hole wasn't very far away from the launch, and about 10 minutes after fishing another guy comes in and joins...He fished within 15 yards of me
Ended up with a bunch of lady-fish, a small red-fish, and a couple trout, and moved on...Let me tell you, with these low tides, its a long walk to the next spot... If there was water deep enough to paddle in, there were fish in it. I stopped up along an oyster bar on the way there, with a channel running adjacent to it. There was a good flow and it was deep, sounded like a good combo so i fished. I started throwing the exude (still not having much confidence in them), but on the second cast with a baby bass RT slug, and got a whack. It was a red-fish! A beautiful little 19". It was a relief to finally catch a fish on one of those always talked about jerk-baits!
After a quick photo, i re-rigged a new exude (Other one was shot) and threw it out. That very cast...I pulled in another, red-fish! I was delighted, took another picture with the bait in his mouth, and let him free. Feeling pretty good about catching red-fish in a new spot, on a new bait, i kept fishing. I ended up pulling one more red-fish out of that spot, (ON AN EXUDE ) before i realized i was running out of time before the tide turned to get to the next area. Moving on...I paddled and walked up to the next little cove, and i heard foot steps. There was no one else around on my paddle there, and who comes walking around the corner? The same guy who was fishing about 15 yards away from me before.
We did our best and shared the spot, and we were both catching fish. I was a little undetermined, because just about every fish he caught he was throwing on the bank (Besides some rat red-fish). Trout, lady-fish, and even a few black drum scattered the banks. He didn't even have a measuring stick, and a trout looked questionable. I just kept on fishing and tried to keep to myself. We both were catching quite the amount of fish. Red-fish, trout, drum, lady fish, every other cast. The key was to get your bait down, since most of the lady-fish were hanging up at the top. I started switching up, using all different types of baits that I've never seemed to catch many fish on before. I even caught my first red-fish on one of the DOA grub tails!
What a day it was, i learned a lot. I will be doing some sheepshead fishing soon, and hopefully will be able to write a nice article for all of you!
Caught all together about 15 red-fish, a few trout, and a million lady-fish.
