KAYAK FISHING

Post by apkim1972 »

HEY FISHERMAN, ANYONE TRY FISHING FROM A KAYAK? I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED ONE AND RIGGED IT FOR FISHING. I WENT OUT TODAY TO KEY BISCAYNE (NOT TOO FAR OUT) AND HOOKED UP WITH MANY JACK CREVALLY, STING RAY, AND A COBIA! THE COBIA BROKE OFF MY 8LBS LINE WHEN IT GOT NEXT TO THE KAYAK. I KNOW THIS IS THE "BOATLESS" FISHERMAN SITE, BUT I THINK KAYAK IS STILL AUTHORIZED BECAUSE IT'S MAN POWERED, RIGHT? ANYWAY, IF YOU HAVE A KAYAK OR WAS THINKING ABOUT GETTING ONE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. I'M TOTALLY HOOKED ON KAYAK FISHING. :D

it was about 3ft long. i guess it's kind of small for a cobia, but it was an awesome fight. i'll try next time.

BRIDGE RAT,
I'VE NEVER TRIED SHARK FISHING, BUT I'D IMAGINE IT'S A FISH WHERE YOU REALLY DON'T WANT TO CATCH A REAL BIG ONE. I CAN SEE IT CLOSE TO THE KAYAK AND THEN JUST GOING ABSOLUTELY CRAZY. I'VE WITNESSED THE STRENGTH OF A SHARK, AND I CAN SAY WHEN UNDER STRESS, THEY WILL JUST GO BERSERK. I HAVE A SPEARFISHING BUDDY IN HAWAII AND HE SPEARED A REEF SHARK IN THE BACK WHILE IT WAS RESTING IN THE CORAL. THE ENTIRE CORAL HEAD EXPLODED WHEN THE SHARK WAS SPEARED, IT CAME FLYING OUT OF THE REEF AND BROKE OFF MY FRIEND'S 600LBS STAINLESS STEEL CABLE AND TOOK OFF WITH HIS SPEAR. ALL IN ABOUT 10 SECONDS.

HAMMERHD,
YOU MENTIONED FISHING IN REEFS FOR SNAPPERS. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY REEFS IN THE MIAMI AREA OR DO I NEED TO DRIVE DOWN TO THE KEYS? I RECENTLY MOVED TO FLORIDA SO I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE UNDERWATER TERRAIN.

NO KINDING, RIGHT? THAT KAYAK AND A BUNCH OF OTHER ONES ARE JUST TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL (IN A GOOD WAY). I NEVER THOUGHT OF PUTTING A FISHFINDER ON MINE, BUT NOW THE WHEELS IN THE BRAIN ARE TURNING... DO YOU KAYAK FISH IN THE HOLLYWOOD AREA? HOW'S THE ACTION UP THERE?

Hey apkim1972 -

No I don't have a kayak but I scoped one out at Outdoor World in Dania over the weekend and they have a nice "fishing kayak" that includes the seat at no extra charge right now for $499.00. Nice buy.
As far as action goes, Beachbum is slaying the fish from the beach in Hollywood/Dania area and having the time of his life with light tackle.

Gotcha was kind enough to inform me recently that keeping your caps lock on is computerese for yelling at someone. I've since been utilizing the shift button and I haven't unintentionally yelled at anyone lately.

Check other areas of the forum for more reports as to what's happening up here.

OH MY GOD. I DIDN'T REALIZE I WAS YELLING THIS WHOLE TIME!!! I better start using my indoor typing. Hey, thanks for the forum etiquette lesson.

My kayak is a tandem model from Ocean Kayak. I got this instead of a one man dedicated fishing kayak because of the rare occasion that my wife might want to go paddling with me. For that, I'm willing to sacrifice the luxuries of having big hatches, built-in flush mount rod holders, cooler seats, better tracking, etc. Well, you guys get the idea. I've seen some really good deals on fishing kayaks with amazing ergonomics. But the important thing is catching fish on it.

I've never been fishing off the beach. It's always the jetty or the pier and quite frankly, I don't have the gear for surf fishing. If there's action off some pier in Hollywood/Dania area, I would totally drive there to fish.

I just picked up a bag of frozen pinfish for this weekend. I'm hoping to pick up a mackerel or something other than a jack.
