Braid to leader - Whats best knot?

Post by Bleedin' Fingers 'Nanner »

I am not sure if this is the forum to place to post this but....

I recently finally bought some of the braid line, a 17lb test.
I like to attach a really long leader to all my stuff, say 6 feet, then I dont have to attach another one when whittling down the leader changing hooks/lures. I only freeline live baits on long shanks.

Anyway, I like to tie line to line without a swivel, and before I tied 12lb mono to 20 or 30 lb floro with the surgeon knot.

Now, with this braid stuff, the surgeon doesnt look like the way to go for tying line to line. I need to have the knot able to go through the guides but still works good. I heard that with braid and the albright knot that the braid can cut through the floro leader.

Any suggestions or knowledge on this (besides 'go back to mono') appreciated. :?

yes go to the front page of the BF homepage and you'll see a link called fishing ABC's and you'll see a diagram of the uni knot there.
Also here is an animated link for your viewing pleasure.

Last month's issue of Sport Fishing had a good article on just this subject, tested several different versions/brands of braid and the conclusion was not the uni to uni as most of us use.

The article also did some simple test on breaking strength of the braid itself using the braid manufacturers 20 & 50 pound test ratings, which are actually not the breaking strength, but instead some marketing label comparing the diameter of the braid to some sample diameter mono.

It was a 12 turn Bimini in the Braid to a xxxxx (forget the name, I'll go find it and edit this post later) knot in fluro-leader.

Got it, re-read the article.. according to the authors testing with 20# and 50# Braid, many manufactrers.... its
12 Turn Bimini on the Braid, to a Yucatan Knot in the Fluro/Mono leader material.

Can't find any good pix on the Yucatan knot, maybe someone else can post 1 up.

Does the braid not slip with that few turns? I mean if that is all it takes then great but I always use 70+ turns in my braid for a bimini.

According to the article, not my own personal testing, anything greater than 12 turns slips.

I've used it several times, not truelu fish tested by Tarpon yet, and have had no slipping of the Bimini. I did just today spool up a reel with a new pack of 20# PP and and also purchased a new package of P-Line Fluro 25# leader and the Yucatan slips like a mother with the P-line. Had to go back to the Uni/Uni for Leader to the PP-Bimini.

Did not have this issue with Vanish fluro leader...

anyone who can tie a bimini is my hero! and likely a well adjusted person. I'm not in that league but heres my 2cents worth. I usually use a uni to uni or a blood knot or a san diego jam knot directly to hook, only difference is increase number of turns on braid side. this has worked well for permit in 20lb range not tested on big poons.

FISH LIKE YOU MEAN IT!

Thanks yall. I will try to learn the Bimini and the other knots.

The uni to uni works real well so far.

I dont like that I cant bite the braid flush with my teeth like mono on the tag end. Cant bite the end flush, just cant. Have to use a knife, and even then it doesnt cut well.

I trashed the 17lb already, the dam braid knots up real bad and appear out of nowhere on the cast (the infamous 'wind knots'?), and there goes 50 feet.

I got the 20lb now, and I like the response of the braid and to cast soo far with 20lb and then bend the rod on a decent size jack or something and not worry as much about the line breakin, I can really pull that mother in with some horse power!

I found PP has serious problems with wind knots switched to Suffix problem solved. I go too light for most, 6# still very happy with change.I still use allbright for line to leader and burn tag end of braid.

After yesterday, Im gonna give braid one last chance and try Suffix and see what happens.

Yesterday my new #20 PP knotted, knotted, knotted, 3 casts in a row throwin gotcha plugs sight castin at some macks off Deerfield Pier. Hardly a breeze, and boom - dam knot, then I am pulling in the plug by hand!

I hate re-riggin with that stuff, it takes so much more time than with mono, then just like that the macks are gone and I hardly had time for anything. At least with mono there would be no chance of the wind knots.

As I remember when growing up, Braided line was the only line available when I first started fishing. As I recall, monofilament came into play a few years after, and was very expensive. Eventually, line technology evolved, and braided line was often difficult to find. The market switched to monofilament lines. Primarily, braided line was used as backing for fly rods, and larger capacity conventional reels, I believe because of it's shelf life.

I find a certain irony that braided line seems all the 'rage' these days.

And life goes on.

And history repeats itself. :)

Double over the braid and hit it with a uni-to-uni!
