Super-Moon. Fishing on Deerfield Pier 2013

Post by percy »

On a whim, I grabbed a friend and decided to go out to the pier last night. 7:30 PM to 12 AM. Here's what we experienced:

Tackle: 2 Rods (Nothing special. 8 ft and 9 ft)

Bait: Frozen Shrimp, Squid, and Lures.

Weather: Couldn't be a more beautiful night. ~High 70s / Low 80s, nice breeze.

Opinion: The fish were definitely biting, everyone was losing bait all night. Not really sure what was biting, but the fish were definitely taking bait and running under the rocks.

Someone caught an eel (first time I've seen this). While helping the gentleman with the eel, my 9 ft bent 180 degrees, my friend runs to the pole, fights the fish for about 20 seconds and pulls up an empty hook. (The bait? Frozen shrimp).

Around 11 PM, friend's rod gets hit. 45 min. fight with something, but eventually loses it while trying to walk it to the beach. We're thinking Shark or Ray, but whatever it was, it was clearly over 50 lbs. (I'm personally of the opinion it was way bigger than 50 lbs).

The rest of the night, lots of bites, stolen bait, and lost rigs. As usual, with most fishing piers, there were too many people out on the pier and lines were constantly getting crossed.

PPL around us were pulling Blue Runners, Snapper, and Moon fish.

Cheers.
