First keys yak trip

Post by squidgq »

Have been on the road nonstop for the last two years. Fishing had become a real rarity. But to get back into the short list of things that make me happy got a yak. And figured do it right or go home. So, here's my keys experience:

Day one - harry harris park, try to develop a system. Day two (today) mm79 work the channels.

Im now burnt, smell like chum, exhausted, and have tan line that matches my sunglasses. I lost my kayak anchor to a shark, got bit by a lizard fish, had some unknown monster drag me over a mile into the gulf of mexico only to spit the hook after almost spooling me. Had tarpon flip me their middle fin laughing. Can you say disaster? No, not even close.

This was hands down an experience I will remember forever. I did catch a nice size jack (nice size for me at least), a juvie kingfish, tons of catfish, the odd lizard fish, and a hankering for some more!

Had to share. Awesome awesome 48hours.

Cool. How the hell did you lose an anchor to a shark? Did you have fish carcasses tied to it?

Was anchored with the anchor trolley on my right side. Fish hooked left side went under the yak and the line was being stripped pretty fast directly against the anchor rode. Fishing Line basically cut right through it like a bandsaw. Didnt even realize until it was too late. Worst part i had a carbiner and float on the anchor rode itself. It wasnt until i saw the float bobbing about 50ft in front of me did i realized what happened.

Sucks about the anchor. Had a stinking lizard fish get my hand once too. They are some nasty little creatures. Better luck will come. Tight lines

It does sucks the anchor. But its a small loss compared to the memories. And hopefully it'll make me a bit smarter for the future.

I agree totally.

I had a boat, loved that thing - but being on the road so much it was collecting dust. And when i did run it, there was always something needing repair or attention. So I sadly parted ways.

The yak gets me beyond the beach/pier, I found that my hookups are more frequent, and even just floating with lines out is good for the soul. The ongoing costs of the yak are nowhere near the boat and with my work schedule it just seemed to make fiscal sense (monthly dock fee's vs garage storage). Oh and apparently i burn a few calorieswhile I am at it.
