Latest update on Pompano Pier!!

Drove up to Pompano Pier this morning to see what the situation is. The roads are open, but there are construction barricades along Atlantic Blvd. They will not present a traffic problem unless it's rush hour. The pier is CLOSED. The snack bar and restrooms are open and running, but the pier is totally closed and gated/barricaded. The explanation I got is, of course, hurricane damage (waves) knocking loose and washing away floor/deck planking from about halfway out, to the tee. The City has got contractors out there and they appear to be replacing portions and I saw power tools laying on the deck. How long, you ask? I was told, a month! Doesn't it figure, a nice storm, a cold front, this time of year for pomps and blues and macks, and.....you can't go there. Deerfield is closed too, in case you didn't know, so it's Anglin's and Dania open, as far as I know, to take up the slack. So then, I walked down the beach and asked the life guard if I could fish from shore, between the boundry markers that swimmers are supposed to not swim near because of the close proximity to the pier. Of course, and I expected it, the answer was an emphatic "NO!" I guess you can shore fish when the life guards are off duty, if you want. I ended up catching about 3 dozen sand fleas to keep for future outings, and that was my adventure for the day. Hey, tight lines, my Brothers of the storm torn plank! Out!

It is gonna be one long month. Nice job on the fleas. I guess they fared well and not washed out.

Yeah, Striz. I was worried that the fleas might be six feet under, but they're apparently not. Hey, don't get me wrong; I had to work to get 'em, and they were pretty spaced out along the sand, but they're there is you're willing to work 'em fairly hard.

They work better if they are alive, but they will still catch fish if they are frozen.

I have been able to keep them alive for 2 days.

Tommy, in this case, I had to freeze my fleas. Sounds funny; "freeze my fleas", because I don't know how soon I'll be out Pomping the surf. ffisherman1 is correct; you can keep them alive but not for extended periods of time. 2 days is probably max, but anybody else can chime in here, if they have some other trick to extend a flea's lifetime.

Pompano is opent up to the T,
was there today.Some small pomps,8 -9 inches, blue runners smaller jacks and sand perch.
Also saw lots of mullet at riverland park off 441 and 595 in the canal if anyones looking for them.
