Spot to take son fishing.
Hello all, can any one recommend a safe spot some where in broward where i can take my 3 yr old son fishing. We have tried the canals off griffen road and are not having any luck. I am not looking for your secret bass spot, just an active spot where we can catch some blue gills, oscars and what ever else is there. Thanks.

any of the small ponds or lakes in the neighborhoods tend to be better and safer than the canals for small children. The ponds/lakes are usually full of panfish and small bass. Quiet waters park in northern broward has a lot of panfish and some nice bass. Fish near the marina in the park, stay to the right when you enter the park and go to the end. Stay away from the ski rixen area. You can easily walk the banks and fish.

try grabbing a dozen live shiners before you guys head out...should be able to get something to bite using those...just be careful with weeds and such as they'll go to them for cover and you can get snagged

I used to try the public parks too. Never caught anything there. They do have fish but they also have a lot of anglers fishing there. The best places to find fish are the private lakes in the communities that don't get fished much.
Look for lakes, ponds, puddles of water that are connected to the canals. I live in a small, non-gated community in Boca that is right across Palmetto Park Rd from the canal that runs along Palmetto Park. The small pond behind my townhouse is connected to the canal via culvert pipe. It connects to other ponds/lakes via culvert pipe. There is a large lake on the other side of me that connects to my pond via culvert pipe.
This lake is full of fish. Tilapia, Largemouth bass, florida gar, mayans, oscars, etc. We have a family of river otters that show up every day. They swim through the culverts. I just watched them today eating a big bass that they caught in my pond. We've had alligators in there a few times too. The neighbors with kids are out there almost every day catching small fish, and sometimes some big fish too.
Any lake in your area that is connected to a canal is probably holding fish and they probably don't see many anglers. Those are the secret spots.

I take my son to a lake in my development. I am teaching him on a small 2500 series shimano spinning reel. basicaly I have him stand between my legs and he holds the handle and the rod while my hands are over his. I work the rod and reel with his hands teaching him. he hooks numerous bass and loves every second of it. when hes a bit older I plan on taking him to a local bridge for pin fish and work his way up the food chain so to speak.
If your ever in lake worth area and want to take the kids fishing drop me a line. the lake is well stocked so its always fun.

This should be the lake. Nice bass and snakehead. Quiet. No snakes in two years.Nature Boy wrote:Go all the way west on Atlantic Blvd, there is a lake there, use crumbled up bread as chum and put some on the hook with a bobber, and give the rod to your son. Simple and easy.
