Report: Late afternoon -dusk Pompano Pier

Post by Master-Baiter »

My how time quickly passes. Up at the crack of noon, work for awhile, and than without warning, it was already late afternoon.

The phone rings, and a familiar voice says. "Want to go toss lures in the surf?"

I've always believed there is no such thing as a stupid question.

So I grab my favorite tossing stick, fanny pack tackle bag, keys and I'm out the door in a moment or two.

Ooops, forgot a bottle of water, so back inside to grab one, and go rushing out again.

Drats! Forgot to turn off the oven. Back inside again, turn off the oven, and put the marinating chicken back in the fridge. I'd not started cooking it yet. Check the burners, turn off the puter, turn on voicemail, and rush out the door.

Dang! Where's my wallet? Back inside, find my wallet and run back out the door, juggling water, keys, wallet. Hop in the ride, and wonder if I locked the door.

Rush back to check, and the door is locked. Whew. Back in the ride. Uh-oh, forgot to turn the porch light on. You guessed it. Out of the ride, find the keys, go in and turn on the porch light, lock up, run back and get in the ride.

Wallet: check
Keys: check
tackle & outfit: check
Bottled drink: check

Good. I'll just put the keys in my pocket and, ummm, uh oh.... forgot my pants. DAMN! Rush back inside wearing my colorful, (thankfully clean) jockey's, grab my fishing shorts, put 'em on, and head back out. I know I'm good to go now. Even have my teeth with me. Fishing tool on the fishing shorts belt. Wait! Grab my hat too. Whew, glad I remembered that. Can't fish without my hat.

Plenty of time, no need to rush, get to the beach spot of the day and begin fishing. Lifeguards are gone, no hassles. About 90 minutes til sunset.

Surf's up barely, current running north, but here I am and I'm gonna make the most I can of this session.

I make my first toss using a jig with a grub tail. Too lazy to rerig to a spoon, I'll toss the jig a few times and see what happens. Knots and leaders are good, hooks sharp, grub tail moving nice. This should work for me.

Tourist walks up and says, "How's the fishing?"

I reply: "Fishing is fine."
Tourist asks: "How many you got?"

I reply: "None."

Tourist says, "None? Thought you said the fishing is fine!"

I reply: "The fishing is fine, it's the catching that's bad."

And it remained that way for the next 90 minutes.

Tossed a jig, than a spoon, North of and also South of the Pompano Pier. Saw nothing. No baits either. Also tried the Inlet just north. Many more anglers, all fishing, none catching. Saw zero mullet.

Same kind of day as well for me,as far as fishing goes! I blame it on the little pressure cell thet came through about midday! I cast everything, big top water ,little top water, dark suspending, light suspending, buck tail, crippeled herring, curlytail, ashtray, remote control, table lamp! Two jacks one small, one smaller, it was however all good!

was gonna fish

I was gonna go snooking last night. Found a new spot I was just dying to try. But then the wife gets this crazy idea to rent the "Rug Doctor" from Winn Dixie to clean the couch. Hey? It was her idea, why do I always have to do all the hard work. Next time I'll know to leave the house sooner, before she gets any other wild ideas. Can't live with them, can't live without. Then after reading this morning's post, claiming no bait around, I didn't feel so bad missing one night of fishing. Besides, the house was very fruity tutty smelling this morning. The couch needed a cleaning more than I needed to fish. No loss.
