Floating Rig (newbie question)

I am a newbie and have recently started fishing at Dania Pier. I have been using a pompano rig with frozen shrimp or squid and have caught a few blue runners and lesser amberjacks (ID from Pics on FWC Website) I am interested in trying to catch some fish that will put up more of a fight. I have a basic spinner setup and would like some help in how to setup a floating rig to fish for mackerel. (From the posts I have read on here and watching wat others have been doing on the pier it looks like thats what I need)
Any guidance in the right direction is appreciated. I was thinking of heading out to anglin or Deerfield on Monday morning, just to change things up a little bit.

Welcome to the Forum !
I'm not really familiar with the rig in question but here's my suggestion:
Use one of the larger popping cork/float with a 30 to 50 lb mono leader about 18" long and a long shank hook. The long shank hook will help with not getting cut-off when the fish hits the bait so you won't have to use a wire leader.

You can also use the simple method.. a Balloon.
Tie a small balloon to your main line or leader, at the length you want above the bait. Cast and let it float out with the wind or tide.
When you get a good strike the balloon usually breaks as the fish treis to go deep, and now you don't have the extra weight of the float to fight or help the fish throw the hooks.

Just a tip.....If you use balloons/floats keep a close eye on them so they do not entangle other pier fishermens lines.

Good point. Guys who free line can be a real pain in the ass if the pier is busy. Just be courteous to the other fisherman.

I use a "trolley rig", it's real easy to rig. cast a 6-8 ounce pyramid, then using a snap swivel, drop a bait down the line on a rig using about 2 feet of 80 mono, tied to a foot of wire, using an albright splice, then a circle hook. This is important because the fish hooks himself.

Yea to people that don't know how to fish if you don't know how to freeline you DON'T KNOW HOW TO FISH. FLOAT HUH.
