fishing cart

i am considering building my own fishing cart. Does anybody on this forum use these things? Did you build your own or buy one? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

I too was looking into building one. I work at a big fabricating company so Im thinking of welding a cart up. But looking for ideas on items needed.
Rod holder,bait live well, tackle box, cooler. Was even thinking of having a battery station on it to play a radio or keep the livewell running atleast.

Yep you will need all of the above, I only use a dolly that I have modified to hold my live well and battery, but if building from scratch you should be able to make a really nice one.

Hit the piers and search online for fishing buggys, this will give you a idea of what you may like.

I use a garden wagon that I purchased for Ace Hardware. It has pnuematic tires and works great. I added 6 rod holders, three on each side. When on a pier or jetty with the wagon up close to the rail I use the rod holder for my rods whild fishing rather than lean them agains the rail. Cost only $70 plus tax.

I had to build my own because I drive a sports car with a postage stamp sized trunk. If you have a big car, suv or truck it's a different story. Linesider is right, if you have the space, big tires. You are not going anywhere on the beach with lawn mower wheels.

I drive a civic and I use one of those lugage carts you can pick up at wal mart. I put 3 rod holders on the sides and it holds my cooler and bucket. I put all my tackle in a backpack. Works for me but I mainly pier fish. That setup wont work at all on the beach. Goodluck!

I have a fishing cart that I built by myself. The only $ that i spent was at least 20 bucks. Just to buy some 2x4's and some pvc pipes to use as rod holders. the way i did it was, I made the frame with the 2x4's and used 4 milk bins(the ones that you could find behind a supermarket.) I placed 2 of them in top of the frame(with screws) so i could use it, to put all my tackle . the other two i had to modified them, for my cooler to fit in, and I put them in the back of the frame. The wheels that i used i got them from thebottom front of a shopping cart (the ones that u sometimes see ,all beat up in your neightborhood) I screwed them in the botton of my cart. the final thing that i did was ,put my rod holders ,(pvc pipes) and a thick piece of rope to pull it in front of the cart. My son enjoys it because he sits in top of the cooler and i just pull him. this cart has last me for a while, and one of these weekend i might just used it again to go fishing at anglins. Before i forget to mention i could also put my bucket in it for my live bait.

ha these are the creative masterpieces I was looking to hear about. got any pictures of them? either way good ideas and cheap but fully functional carts. Im just upset I got rid of my golf cart motors. I could have put a seat on a cart and made it an offroad baitwell but im crazy like that

I bought mine at BPS. It doesn`t hold my live well but I have a bucket that I`m converting into a cart live well. It`s a 10 gal bucket that`s about 3" wider than a standard bucket.

If you want one to hold a large live well and all your tackle, i`d recommend starting with a wagon like this..

Had some spare time at work decided to try to put together the ultimate cart, If theres intrest I might take on orders and build them. I have acess to welders for aluminum or might go the pvc route. Also willing to do real simple or luxury carts loaded with everything you could need. Its a thought atleast.

To early to even say a price, I tend to over due things so need to see what the prices are for a tackle box drawer I have in my mind will be. My options for baitwell, as well as airator,battery and the bare bones cart itself will cost.

My biggest concern is size. What would YOU like a cart to be? I need to start with a shell and upfit it as much as possible. What sorta coolers would you like cause I feel cooler and bait well are the essentials and if I can have a standard size for that it will help in the overall price.

First, I`d recommend using bigger tires instead of the caster wheels. I`d also make it a little smaller for transportability. I have a medium size cart from BPS. I have to unpack it before I take it out of my vehicle or load it back in. Don`t get me wrong, I`d love to have a cart that big if I had an open pickup, and ramps for it. Also, take into consideration that most piers are on an incline to access. Load 1,000 lbs on any cart and try man-`hauling it up a 30% incline..

I`d like a cart that has removable rod holders, sides, and spacers, so the cart could accomodate various types of fishing.

Also with the big inflatable tires, make it a 4 wheeler that steers like a wagon. It would REALLY work great on the beach.

looks like ur off to a great start. Fishing carts are a fun project cause you can customize them to your needs. I made mine from pvc, and it works pretty well. The wheels i chose were alittle small, and a tray around the bottom is a mod im definitly going to make before the season starts, to prevent anything from falling off. The other thing is the angled rod holders....they were to accomidate the low overhang at the pier i fish....they too proved to be a problem....though they are nice because you can sit the cart next to the edge of the pier and you have an instant rod holder

In all it a good cart, but i could have done better....if your a live baiter like me, dont make the mistake i did and not build ur bait tank built in.....use either a five gal. bucket with a lid or an old small cooler and build it right in to the cart so it cant move around on you.

make it simple....tackle storage, bait tank, rod storage, cooler storage....and ur good to go

heres the beast.....

the little tank on the back is for my live shrimp or mullet....way to small. So i changed to the 5gal bucket, and it likes to wash around while being dragged out onto the pier, leaving a trail of live mullet

You say you fabricate,I too have enough experience to get in trouble.

Personally I would go with aluminum tubing square or round. Obviously you'll etch it and prime and paint.You might want to consider narrow some places you may want to take it have ballards so folk's can't drive their cars on to the fishing areas.Big tires with tubes filled with nitrogen,it won't leak out like regular air. Collapsible/breakdown with pins.Sealed bearings on the wheels. Just some random thoughts.

Screamendrag good job that is some nice plumbing work. the only thing i can see that might use a upgrade is those tires they will get stuck on the beach. i wouldn't make a built - in bait well eitherjust try straps or bungees to keep it in place and your mullet from spilling

yea i know...they are easily fixable, but i have alot of free time(still a senior in high school) so i need something to do

. Also is all i think about is fishing, so it helps me cope with the offseason

The tires will be big...but i cant find any that are big that arent like 30$ a piece...ill have to look at the wheel barrel wheels again.

true. i don't know how to get around that one even if you only put two wheels thats like $60. Maybe try e-bay or junk dealers for cheap parts.

Ahh i refound this thread.

I created another thread on this type of stuff with a few links to some realy nice pier/beach carts.

building my new cart right now. It going to be pretty cool. Its made from 5/8 ply. I didnt realize how much more room i could get in the cart without the extra 2 inches on each side of pvc. I just need to find some wheels now.
