Conv. Reel handle modification

Post by kblue »

I always wonder what if I modify reel handle to be longer.

As simple mechanical view, reeling power comes mainly from torque that creates by reel handle.

More precisely, the distance between knob and rotating axis directly proportional to torque.
Torque = distance(r) x force (your muscle)

I've never seen closely, but it seems reel handle length between accurate ATD-30 and 50 seems almost the same.
If this is the case, reeling power of these two reels is same or ATD-30 may be higher because it retrieves less line with the same amount of torque...

With having said Bla Bla Bla, I am wondering if anyone tried to put custom longer reel handle ? :study:
Of course, this may add more stress to reel... but longer handled reel may provide same power to weak muscle man as stronger muscle man reeling with shorter handle.. Stress to reel is about the same.

I added a slightly longer handle to a Abu style baitcaster and it worked out great. Btw, are you familiar with Alan Tani's website? It's just the place for reel gear-heads like us. http://alantani.com

I've placed oversized/length handles on almost all of my Penn reels , from my Senators on down . without any visible ill effects . If there is any excessive wear , it will likely take a long time to become evident , as the reels are not used under a severe strain , day after day , for hours on end . I'd say to go for it . Make things easier for yourself .

Wow, Alan is da MAN !!! Thanks for the link

I think i heard of him before. But I didn't pay attention much back then.
Now, I am going upgrade all of my reel with carbontex drag washers. I see how this will extend the life of my reel.

And, I hope to custom build my reel handle with three positions of mounting.
position #1 for high speed and low torque for pier fishing
position #2 for med speed and med torque for bridge monster
position #3 for low speed and high torque for deep see bottom fishing
