New Fisherman in the house!

Hey guys, I'm new to the South Florida area, coming from Louisiana. My boyfriend and I have hardly any fishing experience but we are trying to make it a new hobby. We live in Pompano Beach and usually go fishing on the Pompano pier or the inlet by the Lighthouse.

Problem is, we've gone five or six times so far and haven't caught anything! You could say we don't know what we're doing, but it seems that no one else around us ever catches anything either.

I've been reading all your posts, and they seem like they'd be really helpful if I understood it, but I think you're speaking a different language! Anyone have the patience to give me some tips in layman's terms? It'd be much appreciated.
