avoiding lead while cast netting tips...

Post by cotton »

I put the line in my mouth (not the lead) while throwing, but in some of the waters where I catch bait, this probably isn't the best idea either; plus, even doing this you jerk your teeth sometimes on an errant throw; I've seen other cast netters (mullet catchers) use some neat tricks to avoid this:

1. instead of putting the line in your mouth, drape it and a small section of the net over your right shoulder (right handed thrower); I've done this a little, and it works, but takes a little getting used to.
2. put a clothespin on a string around your neck; clip the line or lead in it instead of your mouth when you throw; haven't used this, but seen it done quite a bit by the guys throwing bigger nets than I throw.
3. this is a little out there, but I saw a fellow throwing a big mullet net that he had custom built; instead of a lead line it had a big chain around the entire circumference of the net bottom. He threw it pretty well.

Great tip.

I hold the line with my teeth. However, I do not bite down on it. My mouth is just holding the line as a third hand. The line comes out of my mouth without me thinking about the line.
The Judge asked the prostitute, "At what point did you realize you were raped?"
The prostitute replied (wiping away tears), "When the check bounced."

Try to net your dog. It is good practice.
