I am not the best spillway fisherman by far. But In order to fish them you need to know where they are and if they are open. Here is a start on a list I am making. Please feel free to add or correct anything.

Yeah, it is complicated at first but after you figure it out its as easy as 1,2,3.
Upstream/Downstream column: ignore
State column: how many gates are open, how wide are they open
1,2,3,4,5,6: expansion of state column; tells which gates are open and how wide

Theres some data that still baffles me like At Stage M or WEIR elev. the 2 definites re GATES OPEN or ALL GATES CLOSED.

yea, thats probably the most popular spillway in this area....lots of people fish there...Not many catch much...I have had a couple snook there however. Lots of mullet this time of year tho.

I live in coral springs c-14 is close to me should I try to track c-14 all the way to its lock station? Can someone tell me if they know where it is? or if its worth investigating. Also when would I want to go out there after a heavy rain across the region. I see you have the chart that shows pumps activity should I base it off which pumps are running?

Sorry for the many questions just curious and looking into new spots to fish as Im just learning the full range of saltwater/ brackish in this case fishing. I live springs so have always fished bas in the glades and locally but really intrested in salt now. Thank you

I am aware of the spillway on 163st biscayne Blvd. I am wondering if There are any more between 125st and Hallandale Bch Blvd. I am really stoked on getting to fish these and try new tacktics.

I am guessing live bait is the way to go????

This is super helpful. I've been hearing about spillways since we moved here but couldn't find locations on them.

I wonder if it would be helpful to use Google Places for to get better maps, directions, arial photos to scope location, etc.

For example, I created a place for Spillway S-37.

To see it go to maps.google.com and search for "Spillway S-37" or "Spillway S-37 in Fort Lauderdale, FL"

That's fairly close to where I live. Anyone ever fish it?

I've fished it....there are snook there. I think jacks and tarpon have even been caught there. Just gotta catch it when its good.

Thanks, niner. Another question, which is probably dumg (but this is a how-to forum).

When is a good time to fish a spillway? When it's open and heaving?

Also, does anyone eat fish caught in the spillways? Sounds sketchy, but hey I just moved here. I dig snook are out of season now, just curious.

yes people eat them out of spillways. Many say they have a "soapy" taste to them. I personally would not care to eat them from a spillway, but I also dont keep many that I cant out off the beaches or inlets either just for the sake of the fact that I enjoy the sport of catching them.

As far as times go...night can't seem to be beat...and sometimes mornings can be productive. But if the water is moving...the snook are generally waiting for a nice livie to be all delusional trickling with the current.

caught this one last year in a davie canal. it disintegrated when i casted it. but im sure it would've made a lovely bait.

Never tried to catch one to be honest as crawdads have really nmot produced well for me in freshwater a they do up north....
But these freshwater prawns can be seen poking out from under large concrete slabs when the water at the spillways allows them to be seen....

BTW - spillways along the Hillsborough have been on for a while now...

Spillways from SR 7 to Nobhill along SR 84 wide open and I haven't seen them all pumping like that in a long time.

Not that I would eat anything out of that canal but also some snapper ,sheepshead, and sandperch as well.

Chris is that brackish water? I've always wondered how saltwater fish make it past the spillways and flourish in the canals. lol do they head upstream like salmon?

The water to the east of SR 7 is ''salt water'' and is tidally influenced. The spillway on the west side of SR 7 is the divider. I say ''saltwater'' because it is also influenced by the release of freshwater and numerous canals that run into it.
