How do I straighten line for a Cuban Yo-yo???

Post by Poseidon10/31 »

I wanna make a yo yo reel with 150+ yards of 80# mono to use for sailfish and tarpon. Any advice on how to straighten out/ treat the mono so it's not all curly? Best thing I've found online is using a pressure cooker but I don't have one and not gonna buy one. Anyone ever put it on the yo-yo and then soak in hot water or anything like that? Thanks guys and gals.

That is a good question bud. I would be very very careful with the mono, if you stress it to straighten it, it will fail, especially with the target fish you have in mind... That being said, no matter how you straighten it, once it sits on the YOYO for any length of time, it will go right back to being loopy again.

I smell an old man and the sea in the making, keep in mind from a Kayak, this is downright Ludacris, expect to get dunked and prepare accordingly, very minimalistic on gear, strap it all down and if you can get some outriggers on it. Just my .02 cents... When I was younger and gung-ho I wanted me a swordfish from the Yak... foolish...

If line memory , is what you're concerned about , why don't you use braid , with a mono leader ?

Braid is too thin... it'll cut his hand if he were to use it with the cuban yo-yo
