A couple questions about switching rods and reels?

1. How simple or difficult is it to change reels on the same rod from time to time? Assuming I have another reel with different line or setup and whenever one isn't catching I switch to the other.

2. Would numbers be very important if I was shopping for a 2nd reel (different brand) for one rod? What I'm referring to here is the #'s the reel can handle compared to the #'s the rod can handle.

3. Am I better off buying combos that have matching reel and rod or can I mix it up like buying a decent rod with good reel or good rod and decent reel etc?

I am looking for a heavier rod and or reel that can handle deep fishing better than my current lighter penn combo. I was thinking maybe a medium heavy ugly stick or something in that price range..

It is no problem to swap reels from rod to rod...as long as they balance with each other. For instance, I have a Saragosa 8000 that I swap out on 3 rods depending on the application..a jigging rod, a cobia rod and a surf rod. Match the line rating of the reel with the line rating of the rod. You will know right away if a reel does not balance with a rod. An easy test is to try to balance the rod on your finger. Try to balance it just past the foregrip. If it tilts like crazy, it is not balanced, that should be the rough equilibrium point of it.

Awesome man. I think that's the one I was checking out. I've read good reviews on ugly sticks and since they are at an affordable price its definitely something to consider.

If you could visit basspro, or a local tackle shop, ask if you try the reel on a few rods to see how they match up. If you dont the way it feels
Paired with a rod, its not gonna feel good to fish with and might not match up with the reel specs. Also, the local shops might have some nice used stuff you could
