Help with fishing the skyway pier

I just took up fishing and went to the skyway pier several times. It was enjoyable, but not really sure what I'm doing. I normally go just before sunset and stay til midnight. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to fish for and the best type of bait to use.

I've only fished the Skyway a few times, but I know that if you want to target grouper, you need to find the rockpiles. Look on Google earth, I believe they run perpendicular to the piers. Freeline live pinfish, or even better, a live legal bluefish back across the rockpiles. I would reccomend watching the regulars and do what they are doing.

Bigger baits for bigger fish. Grouper will eat a big bait for their size though. When I was there last Dec a guy next to me got a 24" gag on a 12" live bluefish.

Google Skyway, they have their own site and forum. Most of the fellows seem willing to help out with info.

A lot of the regulars fish a balloon rig with live pin fish on the outgoing tide,I saw some nice grouper caught when I was there in Feb/March,have,nt tried it myself tho yet.Live shrimp will mostly just be attacked by baitfish.

check out some of the other posts in this section. i posted some sat photo's of the south pier that show the reefs. also check some of the stuff in the central west section of this forum. big bait=big fish at the skyway most of the time.

Thanks for everyones advise! I went to the Skyway Pier last night and as usual I had very little luck (2 hrs). I then saw a guy named Nick, who was pulling in the Mangrove Snapper like crazy. I walked down and talked him about his technique and bait that he was using, which he happily shared. I then tried my luck again and caught 4 mangrove snapper in 30-45 mins. Best Fishing experience ever!

I've been checking the sat pictures on Google Earth and Maps. Where do I find forums like Skyway? I googled it and came up with everything but a forum and bridge info.
