Boatless Fishing Forum, Reports, Info

Beautiful day today, clear water, no weeds. There was somewhat strong current going north to south, but the 6oz sputniks held fine. High tide was at noon today and I fished from 10AM to 1:30PM. The first two hours were very slow averaging one whiting every half an hour. Then, as soon as the tide started changing, all hell broke loose. Nonstop action with two and even three rods getting hooked up at the same time. I looked like Charlie Chaplin in "Modern Times" . The blues were thick and I got several chopped up in half whitings. I lost some others in the surf as soon as they hit the shallows, my fault for being lazy and not walking in the water (after all that's why I bought waders). The biggest regret was when the longest rod, a 15 footer, started shaking violently and I took my time to walk to it instead of running! You can barely notice that rod when hooked with a whiting because it's a thick rod, I think it's meant for sharking but I got a good deal on Craigslist and bought it. This rod has caught me not a lot of fish but almost all the fish on it have been quality fish, good size trouts, black drums and even a red fish. So it must have been a good size fish. By the time I got the rod on my hands, it was too late, the line went slack. For some reason, I lost quite a few today when I had multiple rods hooked up at the same time and it took a while for me to attend each one of them. Maybe the hooks need to be sharpened? I never bothered doing that and I use the premade pompano rigs with 2/0 circle hooks. Anyway, I can't complain since I got 12 whiting and 3 blues overall.

Thanks again. I like fishbites too, for the obvious reason but I wonder if they are good for blackdrum, flouder, pompano or some other sort after species. Whiting, jack and blue fish are not picky. I have caught them all the time on fishbites like I did yesterday over Melbourne Beach and one guy told me that lots of these were caught over your area yesterday as well.

Absolutely, I have caught black drum, pompano and sea trout with fishbites.
