I hope this is the right location...

Post by cuda »

Since my geography of the coast of Florida is not that great I think this is the right forum to ask in...

After my wife and I have spent some time down in the Keys, we are going to be travel up to Jupiter for 4 nights so I am hoping to do some shore fishing up there (which I think is more accessible than shore fishing when we are down in the Keys). We are going to be staying at the Jupiter Waterfront Inn which has its own fishing pier into the Indian River.

So, i was thinking of bringing a travel surfcasting rod and trying some fishing direct from the Atlantic facing beaches - surfcasting from what I have read on other forums appears very similar to what I have done here for years apart from different fish species (and more fish) so I am fairly confident with that, what I am not so used to is how to approach fishing from the pier in the Indian River?

I was thinking of fishing the pier in the evenings / darkness, I am just not sure how to approach it and how heavy I need to fish. I was thinking maybe a light setup to catch small stuff / bait and then use a heavier rod (maybe the surf rod as I am limited on how many rods to bring really) with a big bait on it and see what decides to pick it up?

Can you chaps offer any advice?

Many thanks,

Anthony

You should pray that they have some underwater dock lights on the pier.. if so you are golden it should be Snook city.

You dont need the surf casting rod. I would bring a 4000 to 5000 class spinner with a 7 1/2 to 8ft rod if possible spooled with 30# braid and about a foot and half of 20-40# fluRo leader line to line connection no swivels. For bait shallow running xraps, smaller swim baits, doa shrimp glow clear or root bear colored rootbear if water is dirty,or the doa swimming mullet. There is a nice ledge on the north side of the dock which should hold snook if they have snook lights lucky you. If you are not getting bites try using lighter leader. Live greenies would be great maybe live shrimp if you use live bait same connection use 1/0 to 2/0s no weights either catch em up. If that pier isnt producing try any of the bridges up there or the inlet.
